Otts scores her first, Skyhawks draw in season opener

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Freshman Amber Otts provided the equalizer in her first collegiate appearance, guiding the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team to a 1-1 draw versus Eastern New Mexico University in the team's season opener.

Fort Lewis outshot Eastern New Mexico 12-6, including a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. The Skyhawks also edged out the opposition with an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks. The teams combined for 12 fouls on the afternoon. Otts played the full 90 minutes and accounted for the lone goal with an assist coming from senior Aubrey Swindle. Swindle led the team with three shots, two of which were on frame. Senior Elizabeth David and sophomore Rachel Peebles settled in on defense and played 90 minutes this afternoon. Senior goalkeepers Riley Bravin and Katlyn Rosenbaum split time, with Bravin collecting a pair of saves in the effort.

The freshman trio of Ashlyn Salas, Rylee Rustad, and Otts got the start in the opening match while four additional first-year players saw significant time.

The team's first shot of the season came from senior Julia Johnson in the third minute, a low ball to the left which resulted in a save from Samantha Jeffries in goal. Rustad marked the second shot of the match and the first of her career, sending one wide left from 25 yards out. The Greyhounds notched their first shot of the match in the 14th minute after winning a throw-in, but the attempt trickled to the left of the post to preserve a scoreless contest.

Eastern New Mexico broke through five minutes later when Hayley Huff collected a pass from Abbie Dickens and crossed the ball low right for the team's first goal of the season. It would be another seven minutes before either side would find an offensive stride, but Swindle eventually provided pressure with a shot on goal. The shot turned the momentum in favor of Fort Lewis, and Otts capitalized in the 32nd minute with a monster shot from 25 yards out for the first goal of her collegiate career off the assist from Swindle.

Bravin collected her second save of the half with three minutes to play, pulling down a line drive shot to preserve the tie. The Skyhawks had another good look in the 44th minute when Swindle found sophomore Rozlin Gomez just outside of the box. Gomez turned and shot, but the ball ricocheted off the post and down to the feet of the keeper. The 1-1 tie held as time expired in the opener with the Skyhawks outshooting the Greyhounds 7-5 in the first half.

Gomez was credited with the team's first shot of the second half, missing wide right after five minutes of action. The Skyhawks had a shot on goal in the 58th minute, this one by Swindle, but another save by the Greyhounds keeper held the score at one-all. Fort Lewis' defense held the opposition without a shot for the following 30 minutes of play. Eastern New Mexico finally had an opportunity on the offensive front when a yellow card led to a free kick. The attempt missed high as play resumed with just four minutes on the clock.

Fort Lewis tallied another shot on target in the 87th minute when Reyes squared one up low center. The opposing keeper made her third save of the afternoon to maintain the tied score. The Skyhawks saw one final corner kick chance, but the Greyhounds defense came out on top as time expired on a 1-1 draw.

Comments from Coach Clarke
"I think we are all a bit disappointed with the result but are happy with some elements of how we played. We have a lot to learn as we move forward. We saw some really sharp movements that opened up Eastern in the first half, but we didn't do enough in the second. I'm confident in this team's ability to keep getting better. Shoutout to our freshman center back who scored a great goal from distance."
