Women's soccer takes undefeated record on the road to open RMAC play

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team takes its unbeaten streak into Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play this week with a Thursday morning match on the road against CSU Pueblo.

Last Time Out
The Skyhawks were 2-0 at home last week with wins over West Texas A&M and Angelo State University—two in-region opponents. In the win over West Texas, Fort Lewis outshot West Texas A&M 24-4 in the match, including a 12-2 margin in shots on goal. The shots total is the most since the 2021 season when Fort Lewis matched that total in a draw against Colorado Christian. The Skyhawks dominated possession for the majority of play and picked up six corner kicks versus zero for the opposition. Senior Aubrey Swindle was the goal-scorer for the Skyhawks, assisted by freshman Amber Otts.

Against Angelo State, Swindle stood as the team's goal scorer with her second of the weekend. Freshman Haley Stafford earned an assist on the goal—her second of the season. Five Skyhawks played the full match, including freshmen Amber Otts and Ann Spence. Senior goalkeepers Katlyn Rosenbaum and Riley Bravin combined for the shutout, earning four saves along the way. Angelo State led the way with 14 total shots compared to 10 for Fort Lewis. Both teams registered five shots on goal. There were 24 total fouls for the match and zero cards were given out.

Otts earns RMAC Defensive Player of the Week
For the first time in her young Skyhawks career, freshman Amber Otts has been named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, announced by the league on Tuesday.

Otts has burst onto the scene for the Skyhawks in her freshman campaign, playing the full 90 minutes in all six matches to begin the year. Her defensive prowess over the weekend led the team to a pair of shutout wins over regional opponents, West Texas A&M and Angelo State. In the 2-0 win over West Texas A&M, Otts picked up her first career assist with a beautifully placed long pass over traffic to lead senior Aubrey Swindle to her one-on-one win against the opposing keeper. She is part of the back line which is holding its opponents to .50 goals per game--second-best in the RMAC--and three shots on goal per game.

Scouting CSU Pueblo
The Pack is 2-1-2 this season with wins over Newman and Northwest Oklahoma State. The only common opponent between Fort Lewis and CSU Pueblo is West Texas—a team that CSU Pueblo tied 1-1 in August. CSU Pueblo is averaging one goal per game versus a .80 goals per game mark for their opponents.

Cortney Cowles leads the team with two goals, followed by a trio of players with one on the year. Three additional players have one assist this season. Nicole Genis has played every minute in goal and has 14 saves on 29 shots faced for the season.
Fort Lewis is 24-19-6 all-time against CSU Pueblo, dropping last year's meeting by a 1-0 final score. On the road, the Skyhawk are 12-10-4. Last season, a goal scored in the 33rd minute stood as the difference for the match.

Around the RMAC
The league is represented on the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll by Colorado Mesa which ascended to No. 5 with a 5-0 record. Mines dropped from second to 15th after a loss. As the teams look ahead to league play, Mesa (5-0) sits in first place and is followed by Fort Lewis (4-0-2). Mines and Regis round out the top four in conference standings. In the South Central Region, Colorado Mesa and Mines are first and third, respectively, followed by Fort Lewis which ranks fourth.

Mesa leads the conference in goals per game (3.20) and goals allowed per game (.40). Fort Lewis ranks second in goals allowed per game (.50). Colorado Mesa's Sauvelyne Randel leads the conference with six goals, followed by Bella Campos of Mines. Swindle is tied for second in the league with two game-winning goals.

Inside the Numbers
Fort Lewis is off to a promising start in 2023, averaging 1.67 goals per game compared to a mark of less than one goal per game last season. The Skyhawks are also holding their opponents to an impressive average of .50 goals per game. Nine players have scored goals this season, led by Swindle who has two. Elizabeth David and Swindle are leading the way with two assists apiece. Katlyn Rosenbaum and Bravin have split time at goalkeeper and combine for a .50 goals-against average. Bravin has faced 32 shots and owns a 3-0-1 record.

Up Next
Fort Lewis returns home for a Friday/Sunday slate next week. First, the Skyhawks will take on New Mexico Highlands for the Nike N7 game at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Since its creation in 2009, the Nike N7 Fund has awarded more than $7.5 million in grants to 259 Native American and Aboriginal communities and organizations, reaching more than 500,000 youths. The N7 Fund supports organizations that provide sport and physical activity programming to youth in these communities. Fort Lewis College is honored to be one of just 11 institutions nationwide selected to participate in the games.

On Sunday, the Skyhawks will play in a Pink Game against Adams State University with a 2:30 p.m. kickoff. Fort Lewis defeated Adams State by a 2-1 final score in a nonconference match in early September, picking up goals from Josie Coulter and Abila Tapia.
