Women’s soccer remains undefeated with a 6-0 shutout of New Mexico Highlands

DURANGO, Colo. – After two weeks on the road, the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team returned to Dirks Field and gave the Skyhawks faithful quite the show. The team topped New Mexico Highlands by a 6-0 final score—the most goals scored in a contest since 2016—to bring their overall record to 5-0-3.

Fort Lewis outshot New Mexico Highlands by a 33-2 margin, including a 16-1 advantage in shots on goal. The shots total was the most by a Skyhawks squad since 2016 while the shots on goal mark stands as the most since at least 2013. It was also the team's fourth shutout of the year.

Three freshmen netted goals, including Haley Stafford, Ashlyn Salas, and Ann Spence. It was Stafford and Spence's first career goals. Stafford also earned an assist in the win—her third of the season. Senior Aubrey Swindle scored her team-leading third goal of the year while junior Anika Scherer was credited with her second of the season. Senior Julia Johnson rounded out goal scorers for Fort Lewis with her first of the season. Junior Sabrina Reyes picked up her second assist of the season in the win. Seniors Riley Bravin and Katlyn Rosenbaum combined for the shutout.

"I thought the team was good tonight and excellent in the flanks. Haley was phenomenal with a goal and assist and in really good movements," said head coach Damian Clarke. "Our ability to keep the ball and do the things we trained this week was good to see. All the kids who played in the middle were good tonight, and it was great to see McKenna Ford back on the field. She's another experienced player to work into the equation."

Fort Lewis earned the advantage in the 13th minute when Stafford beat a pair of defenders down the far sideline. The freshman crossed a perfect ball to Swindle inside the box and just five yards from goal. Swindle wasted little time burying what would end up being the game-winner. Five minutes later, Stafford was active yet again, this time dribbling through traffic and taking the open shot from the far corner for her first career goal.

In the 21st minute, the Skyhawks added their third goal of the night off the foot of Salas. It would be Reyes who got the play started, settling the ball just inside the box and sneaking a pass through the feet of a trio of defenders. Salas took the open shot low right to make it a 3-0 game. The final goal of the half came by way of Julia Johnson who worked to position herself favorably for a deflected pass and took a quick shot from six yards out.

In the second half, the Skyhawks saw three early shots before Scherer could put one past the keeper to extend the lead. Much like Johnson's goal, Scherer worked to find space in the box and used her awareness to net a goal on a quick deflection by the Cowgirls. Spence put the final nail in the coffin with her first career goal in the 73rd minute. The play developed when Salas sent a cross that found the head of an NMHU defender. Spence benefitted from the deflection and sent a right-footed shot low left to make it 6-0. Fort Lewis rattled off a pair of late shots all while holding the Cowgirls shotless to secure the 6-0 romping.

Fort Lewis is 26-4-5 all-time against Adams State with a 12-1-3 mark at home. The Skyhawks earned a 1-0 home win last season. Hannah Paschke was responsible for the game-winner, drilling a penalty kick in the 64th minute to secure the victory.
