Go-ahead field goal lifts Grizzlies past Skyhawks in final moments

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Braden Wingle had a career night throwing for 277 yards, two touchdowns, and rushing for another, but unable to stop the Grizzlies offense on its final drive of the night, the Fort Lewis College football team (0-4, 0-2 RMAC) fell 25-24 in its first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference road test at Adams State University (2-2, 1-1 RMAC) Saturday night.

"We worked and fought really hard, executed better; it's heartbreaking," Fort Lewis College Head Football Coach Johnny Cox shared. "Every play counts. There were things we could have done better, but the fight of the team was excellent. We didn't give up and there was a lot of energy throughout the game."

Wingle's career night was highlighted by a 72-yard receiving touchdown caught by Zachary Gaumont and a 32-yard rushing touchdown on a scramble through six Grizzly defenders. All told, Wingle completed 23 of his 34 passing attempts (67.6%) while his lone interception came in the final seconds of the game in an attempt to keep the final drive alive.

Adams State's Connor Underhill, who spearheaded the game-winning drive in the fourth quarter, was 14-for-25 (56.0%) through the air for 170 yards and a pair of touchdowns thrown to Jordan Neisent and Kentrell Petite. Neisent also led ASU in rushing with 111 yards and another score.

Zachary Survillas and Hunter Villavicencio exchanged field goals to open the first quarter of the game, but Adams State tacked on a touchdown for the 9-3 lead. While the Grizzlies extended their lead 16-3 early into the second quarter, Wingle's two touchdowns would give FLC the 17-16 advantage at halftime.

In the third quarter, Peyton Monson beat his defender in one-on-one coverage to the pylon for a two-yard receiving touchdown extending the Skyhawks lead, 24-16. Adams State looked to put the deficit to a single score with a 49-yard field goal, but Donovan Rodriguez got a hand to the ball and blocked the attempt.

ASU's Rasheed Rankin punched in a one-yard rushing touchdown after three-straight goal-line stands by the Skyhawks to make it a one-score game. Fort Lewis had the ball with 5:52 left in the contest, but the Adams State defense forced a pivotal three-and-out for one final chance. The Grizzlies marched to the FLC 10-yard line, and Survillas nailed the go-ahead field goal spotted from 28 yards out.
