Men’s soccer set to open league play with Wednesday/Sunday split

9/26/2023 11:00:00 AM

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College men's soccer team (4-2-1) is looking to carry its non-conference success into the start of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schedule this week as the Skyhawks take on Adams State University (0-6) in Alamosa, Colo., this Wednesday followed by the Cougars of Colorado Christian University (2-2-3) this Sunday at home on Dirks Field. Game times are set for 3:00 p.m. at Adams State and 12:00 p.m. at home against Colorado Christian.

Strong Start
David Oberholtzer's Skyhawks closed out its non-conference schedule with the most wins since 2015 while matching the program's total wins from 2022. Additionally, Fort Lewis is riding a two-game winning streak heading into RMAC play after handling Adams State 5-1 at home last Friday and overcoming a one-nil deficit and a daunting Roadrunners offense 2-1 Sunday afternoon.

On the Attack
Fort Lewis has pushed the pace across the pitch all season and been held scoreless just once in a 1-0 loss at Simon Fraser University (3-2-1). By the numbers, the Skyhawks lead the RMAC in total shots (120), shots per game (17.14), and sit second in shots on goal per game (6.57). Guiding the offense for his second-straight season is Gabriel Legendre. The junior from Rio Rancho, N.M., leads the league averaging 3.71 shots per game, and ranks second in goals scored with five. Additionally, Anton Hjalmarsson ranks sixth in the conference in goals scored with three.

Rematch with the Grizzlies
Last Friday, Adams State invaded Durango, Colo., and Dirks Field in a non-conference match. Five different Skyhawks (Loic Jean-Baptiste, Tomas Duenes, Gabriel Legendre, Jakob Maurek, and Jeremiah Davis) found the back of the net in the contest; four of which scored in the second half. Duenes added a pair of assists in the game while Aymaro Vargas nabbed two assists of his own. Fort Lewis took 30 shots across the evening, the most by an RMAC program this season while placing 12 between the posts.

Scouting the Cougars
Colorado Christian stands at 2-2-3 this season with a pair of wins over William Jewell College (0-7) and Regis University (2-5-1). CCU has scored just four goals this season, all by different Cougars, while taking only 66 shots: ninth fewest in the league. The Cougars have not scored a goal in any game loss or tied, while both losses were by a 2-0 decision and all three draws finished in a 0-0 blank sheet. Goalkeeper Michel Pinoncely has posted five shutouts and allowed only four goals while making 19 saves (.826 save percentage) against 61 shots faced.

Looking Ahead
Fort Lewis will take to the road next weekend for a pair of conference matches at South Dakota Mines on Friday, Oct. 6, at 6:00 p.m. and Regis on Sunday, Oct. 8, at 1:00 p.m. Fans can follow both games live on the RMAC Network.
