No. 14 Skyhawks rout Hardrockers, 5-0

Citron doubles down on career high two goals and one assist

DURANGO, Colo. – The No. 14-ranked Fort Lewis men's soccer team made a triumphant return to Dirks field on Friday night as the nationally-ranked Skyhawks steamrolled to a thrilling 5-0 victory over South Dakota Mines (1-8-1, 1-1-1 RMAC) to pick up its first conference win of the season and climb to 5-0-5 overall and 1-0-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play on the back of David Citron's five-point performance.

"Awesome crowd tonight, a really great environment, and that's what makes it so great to be home on Dirks Field," David Oberholtzer shared post-game. "Having [Quinn Bosanko] and [Anton Hjalmarsson] back, they're two big pieces that make us so much better, it's great to see their impact on the match. Overall, I thought the guys played well and had a great well-rounded performance all around tonight."

It was a one-sided contest up on the rim as the Skyhawks dominated possession for over 60 minutes of the match, 40 minutes of which was spent across both sides of the midfield. Fort Lewis rifled off 19 shots against South Dakota Mines' four, took ten shots on goal against the opposition's two, and fired off seven corners to the Hardrockers one.

Lucas Martin made a pair of saves on a pair of nonhazardous shots fired from over 30 yards out en route to his fifth clean sheet of the season to match St. Mary's Johnny Thurbin for the most in the south-central region.

Tomas Duenes drew first blood in the sixth minute after elevating near the penalty line on a crossing pass from Hjalmarrson at the end line that allowed Duenes to bounce the ball off the turf and up and over the reach of the diving Hardrockers goalkeeper.

Citron, the Skyhawks junior midfielder from Toulouse, France, matched his previous career-high set in the season opener down at Lubbock Christian (Sep. 5) with a pair of goals and one assist for five total points; he now owns two of four five-point performances in the RMAC this season.

At the 15:37 minute mark, Citron and Gabriel Legendre connected a trio of one-touch passes driving into the penalty box before Citron went to his left foot to punch in his first goal of the night. Only 8:56 seconds later, Citron would find himself unchecked on the right post to punch in his second goal of the evening after Casey Stracher drew out the goalkeeper and provided service across the box.

In the 58th minute, the Skyhawks threatened once again as Hjalmarsson found himself driving towards the right post in the SDM penalty box. While Hjalmarsson ran out of room, he quickly cut the ball left to a waiting Legendre, who beat the keeper by a hair, and knocked in his third goal of the season.

Freshman Theo Bergman, the other half of Fort Lewis' two Swedish standouts, recorded the final goal of the night. Despite being down a man 11-to-10, Citron sent a free ball up the left side to a streaking Bergman who simply outpaced his defender, pulled the goalkeeper, and knocked in his third goal of the season inside the far post.

Daniel Freitas stood in goal for the first 77 minutes of the match and surrendered four goals while making five saves against 17 shots while Charles Thompson closed out the match, allowing one goal on two shots without recording a save. Rider Grow fired off three of South Dakota Mines' four total shots including both shots on goal.
