Regis hands No. 14 Fort Lewis first setback of the season

Set pieces sink Skyhawks

DURANGO, Colo. – The visiting Rangers from Regis (5-2-5, 4-0-0 RMAC) handed No. 14-ranked Fort Lewis (5-1-5, 1-1-1 RMAC) its first loss of the 2024 campaign on Sunday afternoon up on Dirks Field by a 2-1 decision powered by a pair of goals scored off of free kicks.

"It wasn't our best day by any means. We were slow to a lot of balls, allowed too much space and time, and conceding the early goal doesn't help with trying to build momentum," David Oberholtzer shared. "Even though it wasn't our day, and we were sloppy in a lot of areas, I thought we still found a ton of chances and opportunities. But in the end, we didn't do many of the little things it takes to win."

Fort Lewis fired off 15 shots across the afternoon, nearly thrice as many as Regis' six, but broke even with the Rangers on shots-on-goal with three apiece. In addition, the Skyhawks also took eight corner kicks against the Rangers' four but also supplied 13 fouls against RU's nine.

Ignacio Bellina drew first blood only 1:04 seconds into the match when the junior midfielder and recent transfer from the University of Central Arkansas was given a free kick opportunity up the far sideline. The Lima, Peru, native took full advantage and rifled an arcing shot that bent inside the back post and in for his fifth goal of the season.

The Skyhawks responded promptly, however, with a pair of offensive attacks that would end in shots off the crossbar or just wide of the frame. In the 12th minute, however, the consistent pressure finally broke through when Casey Stracher drove to the end line of the far post and sent service to sprinting Anton Hjalmarsson who left his feet and volleyed the pass straight in to equalize.

In what felt like a Fort Lewis offensive assault in the final 15 minutes, it was Regis who made full use of one of its few opportunities near the FLC penalty box. A foul in the 86th minute halfway between the box and the sideline granted the Rangers a free kick, and Elias Taubo sent in service towards the back post where a streaking Cameron Bennetti found enough space to head the ball off the turf and in for the first goal of his career with the Rangers.

David Citron and Hjalmarsson each took a game-high four shots but matched Thomas Kirkham with one shot on goal each. Bellina was the only Regis player to take two shots or more.
