Fort Lewis volleyball drops four setter to Hardrockers

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Fort Lewis College volleyball team saw its winning streak come to an end at the hands of South Dakota Mines on Saturday evening inside the King Center.

The loss dropped Fort Lewis to 6-10 overall and 2-4 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. South Dakota Mines improved to 9-6 on the year and 4-1 in the league.

The Skyhawks hit .169 for the match compared to a .242 efficiency for the Hardrockers. South Dakota Mines benefited from 14 blocks and five aces while also earning 67 digs. Fort Lewis had 47 kills and 58 digs.

Senior Alexis Hobie led the team with 13 kills, followed by sophomore Jordan DeJesus who had 12. Fifth-year Lauren Shea picked up a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs. Senior Natalia Lambos tied for the team lead with 13 digs to go along with 36 assists.

Fort Lewis trailed 5-3 in the opening set after a cross-court kill by DeJesus deflected off a defender. The Hardrockers added to their lead, but Hobie found space inside the block for a kill to make it 8-4. Fort Lewis used a trio of South Dakota Mines attacking errors to pull within one at 9-8, but the home team saw a scoring run to make it 12-8. The Hardrockers extended the lead to 15-9 thanks to productive offense on the right side, but DeJesus got her team to double figures with a hammer through the block. Fort Lewis was forced into a timeout and later made it 20-13 with savvy kills by Butler and DeJesus. South Dakota Mines eventually sealed the set with a kill off the block despite two late kills from Hobie.

The Skyhawks scored three straight points, capped off by a block from Butler and DeJesus on the right side, to make it a 5-5 score. The teams became tied twice more, and a solo block by Butler gave the Skyhawks their first lead of the set. The Hardrockers came back to tie it up at 10s but suffered a service error to allow an immediate side out. Fort Lewis extended its lead to four out of a timeout after an attack failed to clear the net, making it 15-11. The Skyhawks held on to the lead, but the Hardrockers trimmed it with kills off the hands of three different players. DeJesus made it 19-17 with an authoritative kill down the line, and her counterparts scored two more points for a 21-18 score. Shea made it set point with an out-of-system kill and an eventual serving error on South Dakota Mines gave Fort Lewis a 25-23 win.

Momentum carried into the third set where Fort Lewis jumped ahead 4-0 thanks to defense at the net on the South Dakota Mines top offensive outlet. A timeout for the Hardrockers did little to stop the block party, and the duo of Curry and Shea added another block to their totals. South Dakota Mines worked its way back into the set and took the lead with a service ace. The home team continued to roll and widened the gap with a tip down the line for a 14-8 score. The teams traded points to bring the score to 17-13 following a kill by Shea. The Skyhawks enjoyed a 4-1 scoring run late in the set to pull within three at 21-18. South Dakota Mines added two more points to force a timeout, but the Skyhawks scored three straight out of the break to make it 23-21. Despite the late pressure, the Hardrockers earned the final two points to see a two-set advantage.

The Hardrockers pushed ahead for a lead in the fourth set with a 7-1 scoring run making it a 10-3 score. Fort Lewis responded with an inspired surge to force a timeout, trailing 12-11. South Dakota Mines scored the next two points, but Fort Lewis got the next three thanks to a pair of solo blocks to tie the score at 14-14. It was back and forth into the late portion of the set until three Fort Lewis attacking errors made it 21-16 to bring on a timeout. Shea dropped in a kill out of the timeout, but the home team scored the next two after persistent floor defense led to a pair of points. DeJesus scored on a kill to the deep corner, but South Dakota Mines ended the match in a 25-18 score with a rip down the line.

Fort Lewis (6-10, 2-4 RMAC) returns home for a standalone Tuesday match against Western Colorado University next week. The Skyhawks will face the Mountaineers for a 6:00 p.m. first serve. The match will be the annual Pink Game, presented by CommonSpirit. Fort Lewis will also hold its Academic Recognition Night where all student-athletes with a 3.3 GPA or higher in the Spring 2024 semester are invited to the floor for recognition between sets.
