Skyhawks hand No. 4 Mountain Lions first loss of the season, 3-1

Duenes scored and assisted in Fort Lewis' first ranked win of 2024

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Fort Lewis men's soccer team (6-1-5, 2-1-1 RMAC) could not have bounced back from last Sunday's loss in any better fashion as the Skyhawks marched into the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (9-1-2, 2-1-1 RMAC) for a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match at Mountain Lion Stadium and handed the No. 4-ranked Mountain Lions its first loss of the season, 3-1.

"I just thought it was a really well-rounded performance for 90 minutes," head coach David Oberholtzer shared. "We've been talking all week about making sure that our level of focus was super high in every moment, and the guys did a fantastic job of being engaged and tuned in tonight. They guys did a great job defensively and were able to punch in some great goals as well."

Despite the Mountain Lions avoiding the shutout with a goal from Dani Barajas in the 79th minute with assistance from Gael Hernandez, Fort Lewis otherwise halted the top-ranked squad's offense edging UCCS in total shots 16-to-15 and most notably, eight shots on goal against the Mountain Lions two.

It was a physical match in front of a crowd of 219 as Fort Lewis committed 19 fouls against UCCS' 12 with the Mountain Lions firing off eight corners to the Skyhawks three. Three yellow cards were dealt in the match including two to UCCS.

As a balanced opening half was ready to come to a close, Anton Hjalmarsson suddenly found himself out-pacing the Mountain Lions' back line before launching a right-footed shot low-right past a diving Soren Russell for the 1-0 advantage. Tomas Duenes was credited for the assist on the service pass to Hjalmarsson.

Out of the half, the Skyhawks offense continued to pressure UCCS into its own penalty box before a foul committed inside the 18-yard line sent FLC to the penalty line. Thomas Kirkham stepped up and, despite Russell making the correct move to his left, rifled the ball with near un-savable speed into the top-right corner for the second goal of the match.

Duenes put the match out of reach for the Mountain Lions in the 64th minute when the senior from Torreon, Mexico, made several one-touch moves inside the left side of the penalty box through defenders before swinging off his right foot and ricocheting his shot off the far post and in for the three-nil lead.

Aidan Hartman made his first start and appearance of the season, and the third of his career in goal at Fort Lewis, and stepped up to earn his first win between the posts as a Skyhawk and the third of his career. Russell made four saves for UCCS while surrendering a career-high three goals.
