Skyhawks shutout No. 7 ThunderWolves for second-straight top 10 road win

Fort Lewis remains unbeaten against ranked opponents

PUEBLO, Colo. – After settling for a 2-2 draw against No. 7-ranked CSU Pueblo (9-3-1, 4-1-0 RMAC) in a non-conference match 24 days ago at home, Fort Lewis (7-1-5, 3-1-1 RMAC) was determined to finish what it started as the Skyhawks marched into Art and Lorraine Gonzales Stadium on Sunday afternoon for a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match and shutout the top-ranked ThunderWolves for the first time this season, 1-0.

Fort Lewis picked up its second consecutive win over a top 10 opponent in as many games to move to 2-0-1 against ranked foes this season while also earning six critical points in conference standings. The win also marks the sixth clean sheet for the Skyhawks this season and the first of Aidan Hartman's career at FLC.

"Credit to the guys for being really dialed in. In moments like [lightning delay], it's easy to come back out not fully prepared for the match, but they were locked in from the first moment," head coach David Oberholzter shared post-game. "The first-half performance was tremendous, and what a great goal by Jake; it felt like we could have built a bigger lead and taken some chances. In the second half, we had to weather a lot of storms with set pieces and balls into our box. From a maturity standpoint, us being able to grind it out and keep them off the board showed a ton of growth compared to the first match a few weeks back. I'm really proud of the effort and performance today, and I'm really happy for the guys."

Despite Fort Lewis taking steady control early, a lightning delay 15 minutes into play suspended the game for a brief time. But it wasn't enough to slow down the Skyhawks as Jakob Larson was left unchecked on a corner kick just 1:05 seconds into resuming play, and the senior placed a lunging header past a leaping defender and the diving keeper for what stood as the game-winning goal. David Citron earned his team-leading seventh assist of the season after taking the corner.

The ThunderWolves led in total shots 12-to-9, including seven shots to the Skyhawks' one in the second half, and edged FLC in shots on goal five to four. However, Hartman had a fantastic day between the posts as the junior from Broomfield, Colo., made five saves to earn his second career clean sheet.

CSU Pueblo was not without consistent offensive chances, however, as The Pack owned possession for just under 50 minutes of the match and took an even three corners in each half. Fort Lewis managed six corners on the day, with five coming in the first half. CSUP also led in fouls 14-to-10 and yellow cards, three to one.

Four different Skyhawks sent shots on goal, led by Gabriel Legendre, who fired off a game-high three total shots even with CSU Pueblo's Shjon Andrews and Jose Bustamante. Bustamante was the only player in the match to place two shots on goal. Ruben Volkert, who made two saves and surrendered two goals in the first match between the two teams, picked up three saves in the match while allowing the lone goal.
