Eagles soar past Skyhawks in road contest

Lewis hauls in first interception

CHADRON, Neb. – Plagued by four interceptions and a strip-sack across the afternoon, the Fort Lewis football team (1-6, 0-5 RMAC) was downed 55-13 by Chadron State (3-4, 2-3 RMAC) in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contest in front of a crowd of 2,718 on Saturday on Elliot Field at Don Beebe Stadium.

Chadron State capitalized on the Skyhawks miscues, putting up 24 points off of turnovers in the third quarter alone. Offensively, quarterback DJ Ralph played a role in just one score as he connected with Tommy Thomas on an eight-yard receiving touchdown. In total, Ralph was 12-for-21 (57.1 percent) for 157 yards, one touchdown, and one interception while being sacked twice. On the ground, Ralph added 44 yards and a rushing touchdown.

Cameron Mack scored the Skyhawks lone touchdown of the afternoon on a one-yard run after turning the Eagles over on downs at the one-yard line. Hunter Villavicencio supplied a pair of 20 and 41-yard field goals as well.

Fort Lewis sent three quarterbacks under center including Sam Jones, Jacob Morris, and Jake Jones. Sam Jones led the trio with 51 yards and one intercept while connecting on four of six passing attempts while Morris went 6-for-20 (30.0 percent) through the air for 31 yards and three interceptions. Jake Jones threw incomplete in his only passing attempt while also rushing for 20 yards on seven carries.

Kameron Lewis, who ranks second on the roster with five pass breakups, made his first career interception in the third quarter as he jumped a screen pass and made a 29-yard return before Thomas, the intended receiver, made a touchdown-saving tackle. Jacob Penney led the Skyhawks defense in total tackles for the fifth time this season with 10 total, including one tackle for a three-yard loss. Kalib Davis also forced the first fumble of his career, and after making a fumble recovery last weekend, he becomes the fourth Skyhawk this season to both force and recover a fumble. Walter Stauffer was credited with the fumble recovery and his second of the year.

Overall, Chadron State out-gained Fort Lewis 359 yards to 214, most notably passing for 162 yards while averaging 12.5 yards per completion through the air. The Skyhawks led in time of possession 30:48 to 29:12 and held CSC to 5-of-13 (38.5 percent) on third-down, but could only convert on three of its 16 (18.6 percent) third-down attempts.
