Dominant rushing performance leads Mavericks past Skyhawks

Stewart has career day with eight tackles and forced fumble

DURANGO, Colo. – For the second consecutive season, Fort Lewis' Homecoming was spoiled by the Mavericks from Colorado Mesa (6-2, 5-1 RMAC) as the visitors from the Western Slope rolled to a 49-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory over the Skyhawks (1-7, 0-6 RMAC) behind a pair of 100-yard rushing performances from Aiden Taylor and Sean Kidd in front of a crowd of 2,126 on Ray Dennison Memorial Field.

"It's disappointing; we thought we prepared pretty well for them throughout the week, a lot of energy, and a lot of the alumni coming back gave us some juice and something to play for," head coach Johnny Cox shared. "In the second half, they came out and just took control offensively with running the ball while we continued to make mistakes and not play together offensively."

The Mavericks dominated the contest, racking up 480 yards of total offense on the back of a 303-yard ground game led by Taylor and Kidd, who recorded 101 and 100 yards, respectively, with Kidd scoring on an 18-yard carry in the fourth quarter. Brandon Belgrave and Myles Newble each picked up rushing touchdowns with another 87 and 27 yards as well.

Colorado Mesa's lock-down defense perfectly complemented its offensive success, with the Mavericks holding Fort Lewis to just 146 yards of offense, highlighted by Jamal Johnson rushing for 66 of the Skyhawks 71 total rushing yards on eight carries to lead all FLC players in total yards.

Redshirt sophomore Liu Aumavae had a career day for the Mavs, throwing for 144 yards and two touchdowns on a lethal 16-of-18 (88.9 percent) passing while taking a pair of four-yard sacks from Walter Stauffer and Jonathan Stewart, respectively. Stewart also forced a fumble on a would-be third-down stop, but the ball bounced into first-down territory before being recovered by Sam Horneck of the Mavericks. Trek Keyworth led all receivers with 56 yards and two touchdowns on three receptions.

Stone Walker went 9-for-24 (39.1 percent) through the air in his return to action for 51 yards and an interception while taking three sacks. Sam Jones stepped in under center in the fourth quarter for the final two drives of the afternoon and threw for 24 yards completing five of ten passing attempts (50.0 percent) while also taking a sack.

Jacob Penney led all players in tackles for the sixth time this season with 11 total, including five solo and six assisted. Stewart finished with eight tackles, Kalib Davis seven, and Juma Kashanda, Elijah Portela, and Jordan Thomas six each to match Levi Krebs who led CMU. George Soppe, in addition to registering a pair of tackles including one for an eight-yard loss, made a 23-yard fumble return for a touchdown after intercepting a backward pass heading down the seem.

Hunter Villavicencio racked up 368 punting yards on eight attempts for a 46.0-yard average, with three punts landing inside-the-20 and two going for 50+ yards, including a long of 56 yards. Villavicencio also had a punt blocked from the Skyhawks five-yard line that was recovered in the end zone by Sean Sharp for a Mavericks touchdown.
