Women’s soccer matches season-high with four goals in win over BHSU

DURANGO, Colo. – Skyhawks women's soccer saw four goals from four players, including the first of junior Taylor Rittman's career, to earn a decisive 4-0 win over Black Hills State University on Friday evening from Dirks Field.

The win lifted the Skyhawks to 7-4-2 overall and 4-3-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while securing three crucial points in league play. The Yellow Jackets dropped to 2-9-4 on the year and 2-6-1 in the conference.

Fort Lewis also matched a season-high with 26 shots in the win, including nine of which were on goal. Black Hills State managed 10 shots, five on goal. The shutout was the fourth of the year for the Skyhawks.

Sophomore Abila Tapia scored her team-high fifth goal of the season. Sophomore Haley Stafford got the match started with her second goal of the year, assisted by senior Danielle Gonzales—her fourth of the season. Junior Anna Tucker added her second goal of the year, and Rittman rounded it out with the match's fourth goal. Also earning assists were junior Abigail Nkrumah and senior Sabrina Reyes. Fifth-year goalkeepers Riley Bravin and Katlyn Rosenbaum combined for five saves in the shutout.

The Skyhawks wasted no time finding their first goal of the match after a strike from Stafford made it 1-0 through less than two minutes of play. The play developed through Gonzales who sent a well-placed through ball 25-yards ahead into the Fort Lewis scoring third. Stafford out-paced the defenders, as she often does, and snuck a left-footed dart beneath the crossbar for a 1-0 lead.

The Yellow Jackets had the next three looks, first with an off-target strike in the sixth minute, followed by back-to-back shots that were collected by Bravin in goal. The Skyhawks tacked on shots by senior Gabi Meraz-Fishbein, sophomore Josie Coulter, Reyes, and Stafford to establish offensive pressure once again. The pressure paid off in the 25th minute when Tapia recollected possession following a header. The sophomore found space from 12 yards out to send a left-footed shot to the top-left corner for a 2-0 lead.

Fort Lewis continued to pepper the keeper, including a shot by junior Rachel Peebles which resulted in a Black Hills State save. The visitors added a shot on goal in the 36th minute, but it was hastily collected by Bravin in the low-right corner of goal to preserve the shutout. The save played right into the team's third goal of the match just 30 seconds later. Reyes took service from 25 yards out, sending a leading one-touch pass to Tucker. Tucker fired a left-footed strike that skipped off the six-yard line and inside the right post to extend the lead to 3-0.

Out of the halftime break, the Skyhawks were quick to build the lead to four goals. Rittman needed just 49 seconds and a beautiful feed from Nkrumah to put the game far out of reach with her first collegiate goal. Fort Lewis followed with four shots, including two on goal by Rittman and Nkrumah, but both were saved by Makayla Dannelly in goal. Rosenbaum rounded out the second half with two saves in the 87th minute, and Coulter placed the final shot on goal of the match before time expired on a home win.

Fort Lewis (7-4-2, 4-3-1 RMAC) will play in a crucial match against Regis University (5-8-2, 4-3-1 RMAC) on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The teams are tied for fifth in the conference standings with 13 points apiece with four matches remaining in the regular season. The Rangers were downed by Western Colorado this afternoon by a final score of 3-2.
