Free-kick goal from David leads to women's soccer tie

DURANGO, Colo. – Fifth-year Elizabeth David scored her second long-range free-kick goal of the season in a 1-1 draw for the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team against Regis University on Sunday afternoon.

The tie moved the Skyhawks to 7-4-3 on the year and 4-3-2 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while the Rangers now sit at 5-9-3, 4-5-2 RMAC.

Fort Lewis held a 17-7 edge in shots and a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. The teams combined for 10 corners and 18 fouls.

Elizabeth David was responsible for the team's lone goal. Senior Gabi Meraz-Fishbein and sophomore Haley Stafford both recorded three shots and two shots on goal. The trio of senior Danielle Gonzales, junior Renee Junna, and Meraz-Fishbein played the full 90 minutes. Fifth-year goalkeepers Riley Bravin and Katlyn Rosenbaum combined for three saves.

The Skyhawks were responsible for the first two shots on goal of the match, from Meraz-Fishbein and Stafford, both of which resulted in saves for Grace Glover in goal. Fort Lewis continued to send shots toward the opposing goal, but nothing was giving for the home team. Regis found its first shot on goal in the 21st minute, an attempt that Rosenbaum secured to preserve the tie.

The Rangers appeared to have scored the go-ahead at one point, but a delayed handball call wiped the goal off the board. The Skyhawks used the tampered momentum by Regis to take advantage of a free-kick 10 yards inside the midfield line. David lined up and sent a booming shot into the six-yard box. Fifth-year McKenna Ford provided a screen as she crashed in toward the service, and the momentary distraction resulted in David's shot bouncing over the keeper's head.

The second half began with shots from both teams, none of which found their way on goal. Regis turned the tables in the 67th minute, though, and tied the score at 1-1. The play developed with a cross that forced Bravin to move to her left. Caught out of her preferred position, the fifth-year scrambled to get back. While Bravin moved quickly to her right, Brooke Castillo of Regis placed a shot low-right to catch Bravin off kilter.

The Skyhawks had opportunities late in the half, including a well-struck ball from Meraz-Fishbein in the 85th minute that just missed the top-right pocket for the go-ahead goal. Field position favored Fort Lewis through the final two minutes of play, but just as a corner kick was issued, time expired on a tie from Dirks Field.

Fort Lewis (7-4-3, 4-3-2 RMAC) will be on the road one final time next week with matches on the Front Range. First, the team will face Colorado Christian University (5-7-2, 4-4-1 RMAC) on Friday at 1:00 p.m., followed by a Sunday afternoon kickoff versus (RV) MSU Denver (8-3-4, 7-2 RMAC).
