Women's soccer takes winning streak on the road, faces NMHU and ASU

DURANGO, Colo. – After a well-attended home opener for Skyhawks women's soccer, the team is back on the road for Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matches against New Mexico Highlands and Adams State University.

The recorded attendance number at the team's home match last Friday was 412 without counting the supporters who came out after the volleyball match concluded. That number currently ranks eighth in NCAA Division II and leads the entire conference.

Last Time Out
Fort Lewis won its third-straight match on Friday in 3-1 fashion over CSU Pueblo. The win lifted Fort Lewis to a 4-1-1 overall record and a 1-0 mark in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while CSU Pueblo dropped to 1-4-2 on the year and 0-1 in conference play.

The Skyhawks outshot the Pack 19-9 on the night, including a 9-2 edge in shots on goal. Fort Lewis benefited from nine set pieces and did not allow CSU Pueblo a corner kick chance. The teams combined for 11 fouls, and there was one yellow card given.

In addition to Junna's goal, senior Sabrina Reyes and sophomore Jenna Salazar notched goal to bring the total to three on the night. It was Reyes' first goal of the season and Salazar's second in as many games. Fifth-year Elizabeth David and senior Danielle Gonzales were credited with assists. Six Skyhawks played the full 90 minutes. As usual, the fifth-year goalkeeping duo of Katlyn Rosenbaum and Riley Bravin combined for the win.

Scouting New Mexico Highlands
The Cowgirls are 2-5-1 this season and 0-2 in conference play while riding a five-match losing streak. Despite the losing record, the team is 1-0 at home. Last week, NMHU fell to Colorado Mesa (6-0) and Westminster (6-1). They were 0-14-2 last season.

As a team, the Cowgirls are averaging .75 goals per game while allowing 2.75 per game from their opponents. They put up 8.4 shots per game compared to 16.5 from the opposition. NHMU has totaled 25 corners, 49 fouls, and 47 saves this season. Kate Rayner and Acacia Rodriguez are leading the team with two goals apiece and five players have one assist. Two goalkeepers have seen time this season, led by Peyton Greener who has collected 34 saves in 92 shots faced.

Fort Lewis leads the all-time series at 35-5-5 and has won seven in a row against NMHU. The Skyhawks are 16-4-3 when playing the Cowgirls on the road. When the teams faced last season, the Skyhawks emerged with a 6-0 win after totaling 33 shots (16 on goal).

Scouting Adams State University
The Grizzlies are 2-4-1 this season and 0-2 in the league after falling to Westminster (2-0) and Colorado Mesa (1-0) last week. Adams State was 3-9-5 last season and 2-7-3 in conference play.

As a team, the Grizzlies are averaging .86 goals per game while allowing one goal per game from their opponents. They take 10.1 shots per game versus 6.6 per game from the opposing team. Adams State has racked up 47 fouls, 17 corners, and 16 saves. Karlee Caballero, a returning All-Conference player, is leading the team with four goals to go along with an assist. Only two additional players have scored a goal this season. Ashlyn Bartley has played the majority of the time in goal for the Grizzlies and owns a 1.27 goals against average with 14 saves.

Fort Lewis is 26-4-6 all-time against the Grizzlies with a 14-3-2 record in Alamosa. The teams faced twice last season, including a 2-1 road win for Fort Lewis and a 0-0 tie in early October.

Inside the Numbers
Fort Lewis is averaging 2.33 goals per game while holding its opponents to 1.17 per game. They average 18 shots per game compared to 10.8 on the other side. The team has 14 goals from 10 different players to go along with 13 assists. Sophomore Abila Tapia leads the team with three goals and an assist (7 points) while senior Danielle Gonzales is leading the team with three assists. Senior Gabi Meraz-Fishbein,  junior Anna Tucker, sophomore Jenna Salazar, and Tapia each have one game-winner. Meraz-Fishbein leads the team with 508 minute played, followed by junior Rachel Peebles at 501 minutes. Bravin and Rosenbaum have combined for 17 saves and a saves percentage of .708.

Around the RMAC
The league has two teams ranked or receiving votes in the latest version of the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll. Colorado School of Mines leads the way and is the nation's top team with a No. 1 ranking and an 8-0 record. MSU Denver is receiving votes despite ranking fifth in the RMAC in overall win percentage.

Mines ranks first in the conference, followed by Fort Lewis and Westminster with a .750 win percentage. Colorado Mesa follows in fourth with a .714 mark. In the conference statistical rankings, Fort Lewis sits 2nd in shots per game (18), 4th in shots on goal/game (7.67), 3rd in goals/game (2.33), 2nd in assists/game (2.17), and 2nd in (fewest) fouls per game (6.17).

Meraz-Fishbein ranks 3rd in shots/game (3.83) and 4th in shots on goal/game (1.50). Tapia is 6th in goals/game (.500), and Gonzales is leading the conference with .500 assists per game.

Fort Lewis is back home next week with a Friday/Sunday split. Friday's match will feature a 4:30 p.m. kickoff against No. 1 Colorado School of Mines for the annual Nike N7 celebration where we honor our Native American student-athletes. On Sunday, the team will welcome UCCS for a noon start to the annual pink game, sponsored by CommonSpirit.
