No. 11 Skyhawks break even 2-2 with Cougars in RMAC opener

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Despite finding the lead on two occasions and holding possession for 60 percent of the match, the No. 11-ranked Fort Lewis men's soccer team could not overcome a pair of miscues, resulting in a 2-2 draw on the road at Colorado Christian to open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The draw keeps the Skyhawk unbeaten at 4-0-5 and 0-0-1 in conference play while the Cougars move to 2-1-6 and 0-0-1 in the RMAC.

"In general, the guys worked hard, played well, and were in control for a majority of the game outside of a few moments," head coach David Oberholtzer shared. "While I'm happy with a lot of what happened, it's disappointing to not get the three points and the win. We've struggled to manage the game when we're out in front; we've been in that position several times, but we haven't been able to finish them off. We'll continue to build and find ways to finish games, but I can't forget to mention how proud I am of the guys' grit and determination to find a way to remain unbeaten through nine matches."

Fort Lewis edged Colorado Christian in total shots 11 to nine, while the home team led in shots on goal six to five. The Skyhawks took twice as many corner kicks as CCU seven to three, but also led in Fouls 12 to 11. Lucas Martin made four saves in goal against Jailon Gillespie with three.

FLC had a penalty kick opportunity in the 19th minute after a foul in the box, but Gillespie stepped up for the Cougars and made a diving save to his left to keep the scoreboard blank.

After entering half with no score from either side, senior Thomas Kirkham quickly drew first blood just 44 seconds in, scoring on an arcing header from ten yards out on a service piece from Gabriel Legendre nearly 30 yards out.

The Skyhawks' first wound of the match was self-inflicted, however, on Colorado Christian's corner kick in the 49th minute. The Cougars sent service in from the left side, and after a pair of headers in the box, an untimely clearance attempt from FLC resulted in an own goal and a score for the home squad. Freshman Findlay Coleman was credited for the goal, the first of his career, after firing the last shot.

Fort Lewis then re-captured the lead in the 68th minute on a service ball from David Citron from the Skyhawks own defensive half that landed just inside of the CCU penalty box for a racing Theo Bergman. The freshman from Uddevalla, Sweden, despite being nearly seven yards left and even with the goal, found just enough space through contact to rifle the ball past the keeper, and his defender, and in for the advantage.

As time wound down, the Cougars offensive pressure ramped up. After continuous pressure against Fort Lewis in its own half, Lucas Peruzo took a shot from distance that was deflected back to Tiago Gomes, who snuck a shot from 25 yards out inside of the right post past a flat-footed Martin.
