Volleyball wins third-straight with four set victory over Cowgirls

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – Skyhawks volleyball won its third match in a row on Saturday in four-set fashion over New Mexico Highlands University, closing out the Regional Pod weekend undefeated.

Fort Lewis improved to 5-9 overall and remained 1-3 in RMAC play while NMHU fell to 2-11 on the year and 1-3 in conference action.

The Skyhawks hit .208 on the match compared to a .108 efficiency for the Cowgirls. Fort Lewis was efficient from the service line with seven aces versus just one for NMHU. Fort Lewis outplayed NMHU in the back row with 61 digs, but the Cowgirls doubled the Skyhawks up at the net with 11 blocks.

Sophomore Alina Nunez led the team with a double-double, recording 12 kills and 14 digs. Senior Alexis Hobie followed with 12 kills and three blocks. Three additional players had double-digit digs, including freshman Emery Pomroy who came away with 14. Senior setter Natalia Lambos dished out 34 assists in the win.

The Skyhawks used errors on the side of the Cowgirls to see a 5-5 tie in the opening set. Nunez followed with her first kill of the match to give Fort Lewis its first lead. The teams played to ties five times as the score moved to a 10-10 tie off a kill from Butler. Fort Lewis went on to see a lead after a reversed call led to a string of points and a 13-10 lead. The Cowgirls came back and made it a one-point set on multiple occasions, and they eventually took the lead off a kill from the pin. Out of a timeout, the Skyhawks scored the next three points to reclaim a lead at 20-18. The Fort Lewis lead grew, forcing a timeout for NMHU, and the Skyhawks eventually found set point with an ace by Nunez. Hobie put the nail in the coffin with her second kill of the match.

The second set was close throughout the early goings after an ace by Curry and kills by Hobie and Butler made it a 12-10 lead. The Cowgirls benefited from a 6-1 scoring run which extended the home team's lead to 18-15. NMHU scored another two points, and Fort Lewis answered with four in a row to tie the score at 20-20. The teams became tied late in the set, but the Cowgirls scored the final two points to seal the set in a 25-23 final.

Fort Lewis erupted with the first five points of the third set, including a block by Butler and Lambos that made it 5-0. The advantage stayed at five points for the Skyhawks, but a serving run by Maddy Shumway made it a commanding 15-5 lead. Curry added another kill, followed by a six-point run to made it a four-point difference. Butler went on to put away two kills and Shea dropped in an ace to bring the score to 20-12. A pair of errors gave the Cowgirls points, but the Skyhawks ended the sent on a 4-0 surge to earn a 25-14 win.

The Skyhawks carried the momentum into the fourth set, first going up 3-1 and then tacking on nine more points for a commanding 12-2 lead. Hobie was responsible for five kills throughout the scoring run. The teams traded points, followed by another scoring spurt for the Skyhawks to make it 18-6. Shea fueled another run with two kills and a block for a 23-9 lead. The Cowgirls secured a late block to bring themselves to 10 points, but Nunez found set point with a kill and Lambos ended the match with a kill of her own.

Fort Lewis (5-9, 1-3 RMAC) remains on the road next week when it makes the long trek to South Dakota for a pair of matches. Friday will feature a 6:00 p.m. match against Black Hills State in Spearfish, followed by a 6:00 p.m. first serve against South Dakota Mines on Saturday in Rapid City.
