No. 22 Skyhawks fall to Rams in close contest

DURANGO, Colo. – Biko Johnsen registered a game-high 26 points on 8-of-15 shooting as the only Skyhawk to finish in double figures while the Fort Lewis men's basketball team (1-3) dropped its first game at home of the season narrowly 69-63 to the Angelo State Rams (1-1).

"I think last week we learned a lot about being more disciplined, and I honestly thought we did both games," Jordan Mast shared post-game. "I thought our defense took a huge step, showed how good we can be, and now we have to focus a little more on the offensive end, being a little tougher, getting to our spots, not settling for tough shots, and taking advantage of mismatches. Right now, we're just playing, and we need to get better at reading, and when we do that, I think we'll see a big step on the offensive end."

Shooting struggles continued as the Skyhawks were out-shot by the Rams 44.6 percent (25-56) to 38.9 percent (21-54) from the field and 38.1 percent (8-21) to 19.0 percent (4-21) from the three-point line, while edging the visitors from the Lone Star Conference at the free throw line 60.7 (17-28) to 57.9 percent (11-19). Fort Lewis won the turnover battle 19-to-17 and rebound battle 37-to-34, but was out-scored on said turnovers 19 points to 15 points

Johnson has now upped his season-high in three straight games, adding five rebounds, two steals, and an assist to his final line on the night. Chuol Deng continued to dominate off the boards, bringing down a game-high seven rebounds and blocking a season and game-high three shots.

Carvell Teasett led the Rams with 19 points on 5-of-9 shooting including a 4-for-6 mark from downtown while adding one rebound, one assist, and a steal. Shemar Smith was the only other Angelo State player to finish in double figures with 13 points, four rebounds, and a steal in his 16 minutes on the floor.

After a free throw from Tru Allen gave Fort Lewis the first bucket of the night, Angelo State quickly found its rhythm, running out a 13-point lead in the first ten minutes. FLC cut the lead to six, 33-27, heading into the locker room, but it took ASU just three and a half minutes in the second half to jump back out to a double-digit lead. The Skyhawks came as close as four points on three occasions down the stretch, lastly 67-63 with 15 seconds remaining on a layup from Johnson.
