Four reach double figures as Skyhawks win second-straight over Northern New Mexico

Fort Lewis forces 27 turnovers

DURANGO, Colo. – Malachi Coleman led the way with 16 points, Tru Allen and Chuol Deng added another 12 points each, and Biko Johnson supplied another 10 points as Fort Lewis men's basketball defeated Northern New Mexico 78-60 inside Whalen Gymnasium to earn the Skyhawks second consecutive victory at home and climb back to an even 3-3 on the season.

"I think our pressure really turned up this weekend, especially in the first half," head coach Jordan Mast shared. "I thought we were much better in the first half on the offensive end with moving the ball and trying to find guys. In the second half, I felt that once we got a lead, we sort of got away from the things that gave us that lead, but credit to the guys for responding and finishing the game on a high note. Now we can take this into next week, knowing that we can't go out on those lulls against two good teams."

Fort Lewis spread the court in the first half, applying full-court pressure that caused 17 first-half turnovers out of Northern New Mexico and ultimately 27 for the game, the most by FLC since Jan. 2 of last season. On the opposite end, the Skyhawks had its best shooting performance of the season at 46.4 percent (26-56), fueled by a 53.1 percent (17-32) opening half. Most notably, FLC racked up 41 points off turnovers and scored 41 points off the bench.

The Skyhawks scored the most points in a half this year with 46 through the first 20 minutes of action against the Eagles 29 total points. While Fort Lewis was out-rebounded 46 to 24, FLC more than made up for it, picking up 19 steals which is good for the fourth-most in a single game in program history. In addition, the Skyhawks shared a season-high 17 assists.

Free throws and three-point shooting continue to plague Fort Lewis with the Skyhawks knocking down just 18 free throws in 29 attempts (62.1 percent) and eight three-pointers in 30 attempts (26.7 percent). Coleman picked up nine of his team-high 16 points on 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc.

Deng led FLC with six rebounds and three blocked shots, while Coleman tied his career-high with four steals. Northern New Mexico's Nigel Quaynor led all players with a monster 24-point, 14-rebound double-double on 9-of-14 shooting while also making an assist and a steal. Eloy Medina was the only other Eagle to finish in double digits with 13 points.
