No. 17 Skyhawks fall to No. 15 ThunderWolves in RMAC Tournament Championship

PUEBLO, Colo. – Unable to overcome a late two-goal deficit, the no. 17-ranked Fort Lewis men's soccer team (12-3-6) fell to the no. 15-ranked CSU Pueblo ThunderWolves (14-3-3) 2-1 in the 2024 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament Championship at Art and Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.

The Skyhawks were on its heels all night, holding possession for just 32 minutes of the match and spending almost 20 minutes inside its defensive half. Lucas Martin made four saves between the posts against 11 total shots faced, eight of which were placed on goal. Fort Lewis took just six shots and four shots on goal. Ryan nun picked up three saves for the ThunderWolves. In addition, CSU Pueblo fired off six corner kicks to Fort Lewis' one and committed 11 fouls to FLC's nine.

A golden opportunity presented itself for the Skyhawks in the 14th minute when Anton Hjalmarsson drew a tripping foul inside of the box for a penalty kick. However, Fort Lewis would miss, hitting the right post before the ball ricocheted out of bounds for a CSU Pueblo goal kick.

Both sides battled to a 0-0 stalemate at halftime with the ThunderWolves and Skyhawks taking only four and two shots, respectively. CSUP took four of its six corners in the opening half.

Out of the locker room, momentum swung in favor of the home squad, and the ThunderWolves took off in the 69th minute with four one-touch passes in transition before Logan Cozier sent service to Jose Bustamante unchecked near the penalty line for a rifling shot that found the back of the net.

Eight minutes later, a flurry of attempted shots and clearing balls were fired off in the Fort Lewis penalty box before the ball kicked towards the right post, where an unchecked Bustamante once again found himself with space for the tap-in score.

It wasn't until the 87th minute that the Skyhawks found the back of the net. A yellow card issued to Caio Oliveira near the midfield provided a free kick opportunity, resulting in service from Martin that found Hjalmarsson, who sent a booming volley past the flat-footed keeper for his sixth goal of the season. Martin picked up his second assist of the season.

Martin, Hjalmarsson, Jakob Larson, Gabriel Legendre, and Quinn Bosanko were named to the 2024 RMAC All-Tournament Team.
