Sixth-seeded Skyhawks advance with convincing win over top-ranked Mountain Lions

Fort Lewis downs UCCS a second-straight time in NCAA Tournament opening round

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – In a thrilling offensive classic up on Mountain Lion Stadium, it was the sixth-seeded Skyhawks from Fort Lewis (13-3-6) who emerged with a dominant 4-2 victory over third-seeded UCCS (14-3-4) on the back of a two-goal performance from Anton Hjalmarsson to advance to the third round of the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer National Tournament.

It will be a rematch from 2023 once more as Fort Lewis will now head down to Stang Park in Wichita Falls, Texas, for a rematch with second-seeded Midwestern State (15-2-3). The Skyhawks and Mustangs will face off on Sunday, Dec. 1, at 2 p.m. Mountain Standard Time. Fans can stream the match live on FloSports with a subscription.

It was Fort Lewis who drew first blood for the second time this season, scoring the opening goal in the 34th minute off the foot of Jacob Ramos, his third of the season, on a loose-ball situation in the penalty box following a set piece from the corner. UCCS responded promptly, however, needing exactly 60 seconds for Dani Barajas to find Nick Walker for the equalizer and his eighth goal of the year.

The Mountain Lions found themselves with a golden opportunity in the 44th minute when Walker once again found the open space in the FLC 18-yard box. However, Lucas Martin stepped up and made a pair of diving saves to keep the match even. Martin would finish with a career-high eight total saves.

Thanks to Martin, the Skyhawks found themselves threatening in transition, which forced the Mountain Lions into a foul for a free kick from roughly 30 yards out. With just three seconds on the clock, Fabrizio Aguilera delivered an arcing set piece that went untouched and bounced into the back of the net as time expired,  securing the 2-1 advantage at the half.

Hjalmarrson, who has scored eight goals in ten matches this season, put the Skyhawks up by two scores in the 60th minute after cleaning up a saved free kick from Aguilera for an easy crossing shot inside the right post. Hjalmarsson all but put the match away 15 minutes later, scoring once more on a tap-in one-on-one opportunity after streaking down the sideline and leaving his defender on skates.

Barajas managed to score in the 75th minute with assistance from Walker, but the Mountain Lions were unable to come any closer despite firing off 15 shots and six shots on goal. UCCS finished with 20 total shots and 11 shots-on-goal against Fort Lewis' 14 shots, nine of which were placed between the posts. FLC took four corners to UCCS' nine and committed 18 fouls to the Mountain Lions' ten.

Quotable
On his overall thoughts on today's performance…
"Super proud of the guys, UCCS is obviously a great program, and every time we play, it's an entertaining game, and it was no different tonight. I thought the guys looked super sharp from the start and never really had any moments where we looked off." – Head coach David Oberholtzer

On having some big saves and what he saw from his defense as a whole…
"Throughout the game, we were solid. In the second half, it got a bit windy, but I thought we did well with the long balls over the top. Every week, they always make life easier for me, so I'm pleased with them." – Sophomore goalkeeper Lucas Martin

On having a few changes and on the breakaway play that led to a goal…
"The best thing is for a striker to be alone with the goalkeeper and the defender, so I just had to do my job there and score." – Sophomore forward Anton Hjalmarsson
