Three-pointers finally fall as Skyhawks sink Bulldogs, 68-53

Fort Lewis limits its opponent to the fewest points since 2013

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Fort Lewis will head back to Durango and into conference play with a 5-3 overall record and four-straight wins after the Skyhawks finally found its rhythm from beyond the arc, knocking down 11 three-pointers across the night to down Bowie State (3-4), 68-53, in a low-scoring affair up in Brownson Arena.

The Skyhawks shot a season-high 40.7 percent (11-27) from beyond the arc, led by the hot-handed Stewart Erhart, who knocked down four consecutive three-pointers before missing his fifth to match his career-high with 12 points on the night. Tristan Moore added to the deep scoring with three treys of his own in five attempts for nine points. In addition, the Skyhawks defense stepped up and held the Bulldogs to 53 total points which is the fewest since Fort Lewis limited Regis to 52 points back on Jan. 18, 2013.

"I'm proud of how well our guys shared the ball tonight, that team-first mentality is what led us to some comfortable shots and knocking down 11 threes," Jordan Mast shared. "I also thought we brought back a physical mentality to attacking the glass. Guys were flying around but didn't give up their position in the post, and that let us get out in transition."

Fort Lewis showed no sign of backing down to Bowie State's physical offense as the Skyhawks out-rebounded the visitors from Maryland 39-to-28 on the back of Chuol Deng's 11-rebound performance, with Deng racking up three blocks as well for the third time this season. In addition, FLC's success off the glass led to 20 points in the paint and 12 second-chance points. BSU scored just 16 points in the paint and zero second-chance points.

Tru Allen paved the way offensively for the second-straight night, with the fifth-year guard scoring a game-high 14 points on an effective 5-of-8 shooting performance. Allen added three steals, two rebounds, and a pair of assists. Biko John led Fort Lewis to a season-high 17 total assists as the senior supplied a career-high six assists at the NCAA level while also scoring 11 points and hauling down seven rebounds to round out the Skyhawks to finish in double figures.

Four consecutive three-pointers fell for the Skyhawks to open the game with a 12-4 lead in favor of Fort Lewis. FLC never trailed in the game, leading by as many as 15 points in the opening half before a scoring drought put BSU back within one point on a jumper from Caleb Johnson with 5:41 left to play. The Skyhawks regrouped to stretch the lead to seven heading into halftime before limiting the Bulldogs to just 25 second-half points and leading by as many as 19 points en route to the win.

Amare Wimbush led Bowie State with 12 points in 22 minutes on 5-of-10 shooting and also made four rebounds and an assist. Dylan Edwards was the only other Bulldog to finish in double-digits with 11 points. Victory Naboya brought in a team-high seven rebounds.
