No. 17 Skyhawks advance to Super Region 4 finale with a 2-0 shutout over Mustangs

Martin makes a career-high 10 saves

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Lucas Martin stared down 26 shots and made a career-high ten saves en route to helping No. 17 Fort Lewis (14-3-6) punch its ticket to the Super Region 4 final and NCAA Division II Men's Soccer National Quarterfinals with a 2-0 clean sheet over Lone Star Conference Tournament Champions and second-seeded Midwestern State (15-3-3) down at Stang Park in front of a crowd of 762.

Fort Lewis will travel to face two-time Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Champions and top-seeded CSU Pueblo (15-3-3) next Saturday, Dec. 7, marking the fourth contest between the two conference opponents this season. The match time will be announced at a later date.

The Skyhawks fended off 26 shots in total, 10 of which were sent on goal, while applying pressure on the opposite end with 16 shots of their own, placing seven on goal. The Mustangs owned the narrow edge in corner kicks five-to-four and fouls eight-to-nine. Martin's ten saves earned the sophomore his region-leading tenth clean sheet of the season, which ranks fourth in DII. Fort Lewis, as a team, ranks fifth in DII with 11 total shutouts.

Five minutes into the action, Tomas Duenes came streaking into the top of the 18-yard box for a loose ball but was tripped by a Mustangs defender and earned a penalty kick. David Citron toed the line, the goalkeeper dove left, and Citron buried the ball to the right side for his seventh goal of the season.

Midwestern State's best chance to equalize came in the 26th minute when Martin sprinted out of the goal in an attempt to stop a Mustang forward who came streaking in from the left side. While Martin halted the attacking player, service was sent to the center of the box, leaving a wide-open goal, however, Jakob Larson lunged for a phenomenal team save to keep MSU out of goal.

Fort trailed narrowly in time of possession 44 percent to 56 percent for the opening half, but despite being shut out, Midwestern State came back in the second half to win the total time of possession 61 percent (55 minutes) to 39 percent (35 minutes).

Battling pressure to start the second half, the Skyhawks second opportunity came in transition at midfield when Duenes made a lunging forward pass through a quarter of Mustangs defenders to find Anton Hjalmarsson in stride, who then chipped the goalkeeper from 15 yards out to all but seal the match.

Citron and Hjalmarsson each fired shots on goal, while Duenes, Gabriel Legendre, and Theo Bergman each took a chance at goal as well. Midwestern State's Mere Escobar and Liam Pritchard took a game-high six shots each, with Escobar placing two on-goal. Josh Milla fired off a match-high four shots on goal in four attempts. MSU's Daniel Robles made four saves.
