Non-conference Play
Fort Lewis set out on a challenging two-week stretch to open the season consisting of nine games scheduled against five challenging Lone Star Conference opponents alongside a lone foe from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Entering conference play, FLC owns a 2-7 record after earning wins over Texas Permian Basin (3-6) and then-fourth-ranked West Texas A&M (8-1) by 14-2 and 5-2 scores, respectively. The Skyhawks' win over the top-ranked Buffaloes is its first over a ranked opponent since 2013 and possibly one of the highest-ranked victories in program history. In addition, three of Fort Lewis' seven losses came at the hands of seventh-inning rallies by the opposition.

Scorching Hot Bats
Kayla Stone has been nothing short of exceptional at the plate thus far as the senior infielder and Salinas, Calif., native has earned 13 hits in 24 at-bats for 10 runs batted in, seven runs scored, and a .542 batting average. In addition, Stone leads the roster with five doubles and a triple while drawing four walks against zero strikeouts. Catheryn Rodman has picked up right where she left off last season earning four doubles and a triple across her nine total hits. Hannah Rutherford, on the other hand, has the Skyhawks' lone long-ball of the season – a two-run shot against Texas A&M-Kingsville (7-1) – while also adding two doubles for eight total RBIs.

Scouting the Mavericks
Colorado Mesa opened the year down in Conroe, Texas, at the DII First Pitch Invitational where the Mavericks faced off against five in-region talents from the LSC alongside then-19th-ranked Rogers State (7-3). Outscored 37-20 at the invitational, the Mavs two wins came by way of a 4-3 victory in eight innings over Midwestern State (2-8) in the season opener and a 5-4 decision against Texas A&M International (3-7).

Sophomore Marisa Nehm has guided CMU in the circle thus far posting a 1.80 earned run average through a team-high 11.2 innings of work. Nehm has opposing hitters sitting at a .326 batting average after surrendering three earned runs on 14 hits and four walks against just two strikeouts. Junior Myah Arrieta, one of two Mavs to bat above .300, leads the squad with eight hits in 20 at-bats (.400) with three doubles, a triple, one RBI, and five runs scored. Additionally, CMU is 3-5 as a unit on stolen base attempts this season.

Looking Ahead
Fort Lewis will remain at home next week as the Skyhawks welcome the currently 14th-ranked Cougars from the reigning 2023 RMAC Regular Season and RMAC Tournament Champions Colorado Christian (8-1). The Skyhawks and Cougars are slated for 12:00 p.m. and 11:00 a.m. start times on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 23-24.
