Women's lacrosse falls to Colorado Mesa in conference opener

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team fell in its Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener to (RV) Colorado Mesa University by a 16-7 final from the Durango High School Stadium.

Fort Lewis fell to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play while Colorado Mesa improved to 1-2 on the year and 1-0 in the league.

The Mavericks owned a 37-22 edge in shots and a 23-17 advantage in shots on goal. Free position shots favored Colorado Mesa too, as the visitors earned 12 versus just two for Fort Lewis. The Skyhawks claimed 11 draw controls and came away with eight caused turnovers.

Senior Haley Dostie led the team with four goals, followed by Caprietta Abbadessa, Sydney Tannaci, and Phoebe Ramirez who each netted one. Junior Mikki Brown and Abbadessa each recorded two assists. Dostie led the way with seven draw controls while senior Ellie Martinez was credited with three. Sophomore Samantha Rodgers had two caused turnovers and two ground balls. Freshman Olivia Tilbury played 45 minutes at goalkeeper at made seven saves.

The teams played even for three minutes in the opening quarter before Abbadessa had the Skyhawks up with an unassisted goal. The lead held until the 9:13 mark when a free position goal evened the score. The defense forced turnovers on both ends before the Mavericks saw an advantage and jumped ahead 2-1 with six minutes to go. Colorado Mesa went on to tack on a women-down and two woman-up goals in the next three minutes to extend the lead to 5-1. The Skyhawks eventually broke through, taking advantage of a turnover to earn a favorable field position for a Dostie goal off the pass from Valerie Garcia.

The 5-2 scored carried through the first six minutes of the second quarter, but Dostie put an end to the scoreless streak with her second goal of the outing. Brown was credited with an assist on the score. Colorado Mesa responded with two late goals to own a 7-3 lead heading into halftime.

The Skyhawks began the third quarter with a draw control and back-to-back shots to establish offensive pressure early. The Mavericks followed with an early shot, but Tilbury picked up the save to hold the score. The visitors eventually scored another goal with a woman-up opportunity to make it 8-3. Ramirez countered at the 9:39 mark with a goal from the top of the circle, but that was quickly answered by a Colorado Mesa goal moments later. The Mavericks would go on a 4-0 scoring run before a Dostie goal with two seconds remaining made it 13-5.

Colorado Mesa added another goal one minute into the fourth quarter, and Dostie did the same on the ensuing possession to make it 14-6. Tilbury added two more saves over the following minutes before the Mavericks extended the lead to 16-6. The Skyhawks tested the goalkeeper with two shots, both saved, until Tannaci managed to find the back of the net off an assist by Autumn Rymerson. Fort Lewis added three more shots down the stretch, but the game would end in a 16-7 final.
