Skyhawks match program record with 25 goals in a win over Southern Wesleyan

CENTER, S.C. – In a game that saw 15 different players score at least one goal, the Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team ran away with a dominant 25-3 win over Southern Wesleyan University. The goal total matches a program record, and three goals allowed is the fewest since the 2022 season.

Fort Lewis improved to 1-3 overall while Southern Wesleyan dropped to 1-9 on the year.

The Skyhawks outshot the Warriors 43-12, including a 38-7 edge in shots on goal. The Fort Lewis defense was pesky throughout the contest, forcing 32 turnovers and holding Southern Wesleyan 9-of-18 on clears. Fort Lewis racked up 39 ground balls, 17 draws, and went 5-of-6 on free-position shots.

Four players earned hat tricks in the win, including seniors Caprietta Abbadessa and Haley Dostie, junior Mikki Brown, and sophomore Zoi Delgado. Freshmen Kayleigh Bauroth, Avaree Carmine, Sierra Lund, and Victoria Barletta each scored their first career goals. Redshirt sophomore Valerie Garcia and Dostie led all players with three assists each. Senior Ellie Martinez was active on the defensive side of the ball with a career-high six caused turnovers (second in single-game program history) to go along with five ground balls. Junior Caley Lay earned the win between the pipes, playing 33 minutes and grabbing two saves.

The Skyhawks jumped out to a quick lead just 23 seconds into play when back-to-back draw controls led to goals by Phoebe Ramirez and Sydney Tannaci. Fort Lewis added its third goal in just three minutes when Brown earned a caused turnover, ground ball, free position, and capped it off with her third goal of the year. The Warriors scored their first goal of the outing moments later, but the Skyhawks answered back to goals by Dostie and Brown to extend the lead to 5-1.

The Fort Lewis defense continued to preserve offensive possession for the team, forcing a fourth caused turnover and failed clear through eight minutes of play to hold the ball in the offensive third. The pressure paid off for the sixth time as freshman Bauroth made it 6-1 with the first goal of her career. Turnovers continued to plague Southern Wesleyan, directly leading to goals by Carmine and Brown to extend the lead to 8-1. The Warriors scored their second goal of the afternoon with 23 seconds remaining, but Dostie netted a buzzer-beater to see a 9-2 margin.

The offensive prowess carried into the second quarter with Abbadessa quickly extending the lead to 10-2 with an unassisted goal. The Skyhawks would add goals from three different players, including Bauroth's second to give the teams a continuous clock. The Skyhawks continued to dominate both offensively and defensively to carry a 15-2 lead into the break. The Fort Lewis defensive unit allowed just two shots and zero shots on goal in the second quarter.

The Skyhawks wasted no time adding to their goal total out of the intermission, seeing scores from senior Kaylin Vanzant and Tannaci to extend the lead to 15 goals. The Warriors managed to sneak into their offensive third midway through the quarter, but off-target shots and a save by freshman Olivia Tilbury maintained the score. Freshman Olivia Tilbury broke through with a late goal, along with a previous goal by Dostie, to make it 19-2 heading into the final quarter.

The hot start trend carried into the fourth quarter with sophomore Zoi Delgado draining a pass from Price to reach 20 goals. Southern Wesleyan added its third goal of the afternoon by taking advantage of a called foul, but junior Allie Elliot found an answer with a goal six minutes into play for a 21-3 score. The team's 22nd goal of the game came from a caused turnover by Marla Warrior who passed ahead to Lund for the quick score. The Warriors continued to cycle their goalkeepers, but the move didn't phase the Skyhawks. The game's final four minutes saw three more goals, including the nail in the coffin from graduate student JoJo Lutz who slung her first of the season to wrap things up in a 25-3 final.
