Women's lacrosse wraps up nonconference schedule with loss to Lions

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – The Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team closed out its nonconference schedule with a 20-13 loss to Emmanuel University on Friday afternoon. The Skyhawks return to Durango with a 1-4 record while the Lions leave their home field at 9-4 on the year.

Emmanuel narrowly led the way with 33 shots compared to 28 for Fort Lewis. The Lions put 31 shots on goal versus 21 for the Skyhawks. The teams combined for 65 ground balls, and Fort Lewis forced 22 turnovers in the game.

Senior Haley Dostie led the team with three goals to go along with an assist, followed by the senior trio of Caprietta Abbadessa, Ellie Martinez, and Autumn Rymerson who each netted two goals. Junior Mikki Brown contributed a pair of assists. Defensively, graduate student JoJo Lutz paved the way with three caused turnovers and four ground balls. Junior Caley Lay was in the net for the complete game, making 11 saves along the way.

Lay picked up four quick saves to begin the game, holding things scoreless through five minutes of play. The defensive prowess paid off as Fort Lewis took advantage of a caused turnover by Abbadessa to convert a Dostie goal for the 1-0 lead. A similar scenario played out on the following drive, first with an Abbadessa caused turnover before senior Kaylin Vanzant put an exclamation point on the play with a goal. The Lions went on to cut the deficit in half with a free position goal at the 4:37 mark, followed by the equalizer with 90 seconds remaining. Fort Lewis earned two caused turnovers down the stretch to hold the score at 2-2 after one-quarter of play.

Quarter two began similarly with Fort Lewis forcing an onslaught of turnovers to maintain the knotted score. The Skyhawks struck first with a free-position goal by freshman Piper Price, but the Lions quickly responded just 40 seconds later to make it 3-3. Emmanuel was finally able to add separation with two more goals midway through the quarter. Lay corralled a free position shot for another save, but the Lions managed a woman-up goal at the under six-minute mark to double the lead at 6-3. Martinez had the final look in the half, scoring off an assist from Abbadessa to make it a two-goal game at the break.

Emmanuel extended the lead early in the third quarter with two quick goals before a shot from junior Phoebe Ramirez found the back of the net for an 8-5 score. Momentum stayed with the Skyhawks after a draw and ground ball from Brown resulted in a Rymerson goal to cut the difference to two goals. The Lions would then take advantage of a Skyhawks yellow card to score two woman-up goals. Fort Lewis found an answer with back-to-back goals by redshirt sophomore Valerie Garcia and Abbadessa. Goals kept coming for both teams, including a late one by the Lions to make it 12-10 heading into the fourth quarter.

The game broke open in the fourth quarter, first with three-straight goals by Emmanuel to extend the lead to 15-10. Fort Lewis found an answer at the 9:16 mark with a free position goal by Rymerson making it 15-11. The Lions went on the take advantage of turnovers and draw controls to rapidly pad the lead thanks to four goals. Martinez slowed the momentum with a goal at the two-minute mark. The final minutes of play saw a Lions goal, followed by a late free position goal from Abbadessa to end the game in a 20-13 score.
