Skyhawks drop conference contest to Griffins, 13-7

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team jumped back into Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play on Monday afternoon, falling to Westminster University by a 13-7 final from Ray Dennison Memorial Field.

The Skyhawks dropped to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in RMAC play while the Griffins improved to 2-4, 2-0 RMAC.

Westminster finished with an edge in shots (32-23) and shots on goal (22-15). Fort Lewis committed 29 turnovers compared to 24 for Westminster. The teams each successfully cleared 19 times and combined for 48 ground balls.

Senior Caprietta Abbadessa led the team with two goals, followed by five players with one apiece. Junior Mikki Brown had one goal and an assist, and freshman Piper Price contributed one assist. Defensively, Sydney Tannaci led the way with four caused turnovers to go along with three ground balls and a goal. Sophomore Samantha Rodgers led the team with four ground balls. Junior Caley Lay got the start at goalkeeper and made six saves.

Defense was the star of the show in the first quarter, starting with a caused turnover by Tannaci which directly led to a goal by junior Phoebe Ramirez. The Skyhawks held on to the pressure through five minutes of play before the Griffins scored an equalizer with 9:52 on the clock. Lay went on to make a save, and the Skyhawks continued to force off-balance shots to hold the score. Fort Lewis eventually broke through with the go-ahead goal at the three-minute mark off the stick of Abbadessa. Out of a Westminster timeout, the visitors tallied a pair of shots, but Fort Lewis could clear and maintain a one-goal edge heading into the second quarter.

Quarter two began similarly, this time with the Griffins scoring first. Fort Lewis regrouped and took advantage of a Tannaci caused turnover to get back into the offensive third. Abbadessa eventually scored on a free position shot to make it 3-2. The teams traded shots from there, including three in a row from senior Autumn Rymerson and Brown, but the opposing keeper held the score. The final five minutes of the half saw Westminster take advantage of Fort Lewis turnovers for a pair of goals to own a 4-3 lead at intermission.

The Griffins opened the third quarter with a quick goal, answered by a goal from redshirt sophomore Valerie Garcia at the 13:27 mark. Lay would make another save on the following play, but the Griffins found momentum for four-straight goals and a 9-4 lead with five minutes on the clock. The Skyhawks came back with shots from sophomore Zoi Delgado and Garcia before a woman-up shot by Tannaci found the back of the net. The 9-5 margin held at the buzzer thanks to a late save from freshman goalkeeper Olivia Tilbury.

Westminster started the fourth with two more goals to bring on a Fort Lewis timeout just three minutes into play. The quick regroup worked wonders as a goal from Brown made it 11-6 with a free position goal at the 10-minute mark. The Griffins scored two more goals midway through the quarter before Fort Lewis picked up possession. Fort Lewis sent six shots toward the keeper, four of which were saved before Rymerson snuck one past for a 13-7 score. The score would hold for the final two minutes of play with Tilbury picking up one more save down the stretch.
