Women’s lacrosse suffers road loss to UCCS after a fourth-quarter surge

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After playing even through three quarters, UCCS used a six-goal fourth quarter to run away with a 12-8 victory over Fort Lewis College in Thursday afternoon women's lacrosse action.

Fort Lewis fell to 1-6 on the year and 0-3 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while UCCS improved to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in conference action.

UCCS held a slight advantage in shots at 26-24 while Fort Lewis ended the game with a 30-20 edge in ground balls. The teams combined for 19 saves and each netted one, free-position goal.

Senior Caprietta Abbadessa led the Skyhawks with four goals and one assist, followed by Haley Dostie, Ellie Martinez, and Mikki Brown who each scored one goal. Graduate student JoJo Lutz led the team with two caused turnovers to go along with two ground balls. Junior goalkeeper Caley Lay had 12 saves and led the team with five ground balls.

The Skyhawks forced an immediate turnover to begin the game and tested the opposing keeper with a shot on goal 90 seconds into play. Despite the early pressure, the Mountain Lions were the first to strike with a goal at the 12-minute mark. After eight minutes of back-and-forth play, Fort Lewis broke through with a goal by Abbadessa to even things up. UCCS responded by forcing a turnover and converting for its second goal of the game, going up 2-1 heading into the second quarter.

Lay opened the second quarter with a save, and Fort Lewis forced a free position opportunity which evened the score thanks to a goal by Brown. The Mountain Lions wasted no time before reclaiming the lead with their third goal of the game just 30 seconds later. Fort Lewis took advantage of another turnover by UCCS at the 7:05 mark, converting for a goal from Abbadessa to knot it at three-all. A similar order of events played out three minutes later when Brown found Rymerson for the go-ahead goal with under four remaining. The final four minutes of the quarter were offense-heavy as the Mountain Lions scored back-to-back goals before a late Abbadessa goal sent the teams into the intermission in a 5-5 deadlock.

Fort Lewis sent a pair of shots on goal early in the third quarter, but it was UCCS that was the first to score with its sixth goal three minutes into play. The Skyhawks kept themselves in good position with caused turnovers by Abbadessa and Lutz keeping the team in its offensive third. The pressure paid off at the 3:55 mark when Abbadessa broke through with her 17th goal of the season to tie it again. Lay preserved the score with her seventh and eighth saves of the afternoon. The 6-6 tied remained heading into the final quarter of play thanks to a late caused turnover by the Mountain Lions.

UCCS broke the tie during its first possession, but Fort Lewis answered back moments later thanks to a goal by Dostie to make it 7-7. The Mountain Lions netted their eighth goal of the game with just under 10 minutes on the clock and took advantage of a yellow card to go up by two goals with 7:41 to go. It took another minute of play for UCCS to tack on another goal, using a foul to secure a favorable field position as Fort Lewis called a timeout. The Mountain Lions continued to pour on goals throughout the quarter and extended the lead to 12-7 with just under four minutes remaining. Fort Lewis added one more goal with 1:52 on the clock to make it 12-8, but that score held as time ran out on the contest.
