Martinez nets three goals in neutral site loss to Concordia St. Paul

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Senior Ellie Martinez led the offense with three goals in the Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse season opener, but the Skyhawks ultimately fell to Concordia St. Paul by an 18-8 final score from Mountain Lion Stadium on the campus of UCCS.

Fort Lewis dropped to 0-1 while CSP improved to 3-4 on the year.

The Golden Bears held a 32-24 edge in shots, and the team's goalkeepers were even with seven saves apiece. CSP committed 16 turnovers compared to 14 for Fort Lewis, and the Skyhawks owned the advantage with 27 ground balls. The Skyhawks were 14-of-20 on clear attempts and 3-of-10 with free position shots.

Martinez led the way with three goals, followed by five players who scored one apiece. Senior Haley Dostie led the team with two assists, followed by junior Mikki Brown and redshirt sophomore Valerie Garcia who each notched one. Sophomore Samantha Rodgers had a quality showing on defense with five ground balls, three caused turnovers, and one goal to her credit. Five players came away with three ground balls. Junior Caley Lay got the start at goalkeeper and collected seven saves,

In the first quarter, the Golden Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Skyhawks netted their first of the season off the stick of junior Phoebe Ramirez. The final three minutes of the quarter saw shots from senior Autumn Rymerson and Martinez, but the opposing keeper held it at a two-goal difference.

The second quarter was the most offensively fruitful for Fort Lewis, starting with an early goal by sophomore Sydney Tannaci to pull the team within one. Rodgers followed that up by capitalizing on a free position opportunity to make it 3-3 with 12:15 on the clock. CSP responded with two quick goals before the teams traded free position goals to make it 7-4 midway through the quarter.

Lay made a big save on the Golden Bears' next free position chance, and Martinez capitalized with her first goal of the day to make it 7-5. CSP was able to net one more goal in the final four minutes of the quarter, but the Skyhawks' defense forced a late shot clock turnover to maintain an 8-5 score at halftime.

Fouls and turnover plagued Fort Lewis early in the third quarter as CSP used the miscues to extend the lead to 14-5 with six unanswered goals. Martinez snapped the scoreless streak with a free position goal, but the Golden Bears came back with two goals to close out the third quarter with a 16-6 lead.

Fort Lewis' defense, led by ground balls from graduate student JoJo Lutz and senior Caprietta Abbadessa, held CSP off the scoreboard through nearly four minutes of the final quarter. Still, the Golden Bears eventually broke through with their 17th goal at the 11-minute mark. Brown fueled Martinez's third goal of the outing after converting on a ground ball to make it a 10-goal differential.

The Skyhawks sent four more shots toward goal down the stretch, one of which fell for a goal by senior Autumn Rymerson. CSP closed out the game with a goal with one second on the clock, earning an 18-8 win.
