Skyhawks suffer loss to Griffins after a fourth quarter surge

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – After a lengthy administrative delay on Sunday, the Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team suffered a 12-8 defeat at the hands of Westminster University. The Griffins outscored the Skyhawks by six goals late in the second half to defend their home field.

Fort Lewis fell to 2-8 overall and 1-5 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while Westminster improved to 4-5 on the year and 4-2 in league play

Westminster outshot Fort Lewis 27-21 on the afternoon, including a 24-15 edge in shots on goal. The Griffins held an advantage in most statistical categories, including ground balls (29-20) and draw controls (10-7).

Senior Autumn Rymerson led the team with two goals while six players contributed one apiece. Sophomore Samantha Rodgers led the way with five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Junior Mikki Brown earned five draws to go along with a caused turnover. Junior Caley Lay went the distance at goalkeeper and netted 12 saves.

The Skyhawks were the first to score after a Westminster turnover allowed Brown to give her team the 1-0 lead early. Fort Lewis went on to make it a 3-0 edge with goals by junior Phoebe Ramirez and senior Kaylin Vanzant marking the midway point in the quarter. Westminster benefited from a pair of turnovers to pull within one and found the game-tying goal on a buzzer beater to make it 3-3.

Westminster scored its fourth-straight goal to see a 4-3 lead four minutes into the second quarter and eventually extended its lead to two goals at the 6:40 mark. Rodgers got her team back on track with a caused turnover, leading to a goal by freshman Victoria Barletta to pull the team within one. Senior Ellie Martinez ended the quarter with a goal of an assist from senior Caprietta Abbadessa to make it 5-5 heading into the break.

Lay opened the third quarter with two saves before Rymerson converted for a goal to see the Skyhawks reclaim the lead. The Griffins added an equalizer but Lay continued to impress with free position saves to keep Fort Lewis in contention. The defense turned into offense, and freshman Sierra Lund made it 7-6 with her first goal of the day. That score would ultimately hold true for over 90 minutes as an administrative issue with rule interpretation led to a lengthy break in play. After the pause in action, but game moved to the fourth quarter in a 7-6 score.

The Griffins found renewed energy out of the break and started their scoring surge just 50 seconds into the quarter to make it 7-7. Turnovers plagued Fort Lewis down the stretch as five more goals ended the game in a 12-8 score. Rymerson was able to score a goal in the final minute to break the scoreless skid.

Fort Lewis will play its final road game of the regular-season next week against CSU Pueblo. Saturday's game will begin at noon from Art and Lorraine Gonzales Stadium in Pueblo, Colorado.
