Brown's four goal day leads Fort Lewis to series sweep of CSU Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colo. – Led by four goals from junior Mikki Brown, the Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team earned the series sweep over CSU Pueblo with a 13-9 road win.

Fort Lewis improved to 3-9 overall and 2-6 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Play while CSU Pueblo fell to 2-10 on the year and 0-8 in league play.

Fort Lewis outshot CSU Pueblo 38-26, including a 26-18 advantage in shots on goal. The Pack committed 29 turnovers and was 22-of-31 on clears. The Skyhawks scored four goals via free positions compared to zero for the Pack.

Junior Mikki Brown led the team with four goals, followed by senior Caprietta Abbadessa who scored three. Sophomore Sydney Tannaci paced the defense with four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Graduate student JoJo Lutz and sophomore Samantha Rodgers followed with three caused turnovers apiece. Seniors Autumn Rymerson and Ellie Martinez each recorded three draws. Junior Caley Lay played 45 minutes between the pipes and came away with eight saves.

The Pack struck first with a goal 23 seconds into the contest, but four-straight caused turnovers by the Skyhawks held the score for four minutes. Fort Lewis evened things up at the 11 minutes mark when Garcia found Martinez for her 11^th goal of the season. Vanzant made it a 2-1 score five minutes later with a free position goal, and Abbadessa extended the lead in the final seconds to give her team a two-goal edge heading into the second quarter.

Fort Lewis extended the lead off the stick of Brown three minutes into the second quarter to make it 4-1. Caused turnovers continued to give the Skyhawks a favorable field position, including one by Rodgers that allowed Brown to net her second goal of the afternoon. The Pack broke their scoreless skid with a goal at the 5:29 mark, but Brown's outing continued with two more goals to make it 7-2 with under four minutes to go. Abbadessa scored her second goal of the day to make it 8-2 heading into the break.

CSU Pueblo came out firing in the third quarter, scoring back-to-back goals to make it 8-4 after 90 seconds of play. Garcia slowed the momentum with her first goal of the game moments later to give Fort Lewis a five-goal advantage. Goals continued to pour in on both, but the Pack had the last say with their fifth goal of the quarter making it 11-7 Skyhawks with 15 minutes to play.

The Pack began the final quarter with a caused turnover which led to a goal to make it 11-8. Defense was on lock over the next 10 minutes, including caused turnovers by Rodgers and Lutz to go along with a free position save from Lay to preserve the lead. The Skyhawks padded the lead late in the quarter after goals by Tannaci and Abbadessa made it 13-8, and a late goal by the Pack was not enough as time expired on a Fort Lewis win.

Fort Lewis (3-9, 2-6 RMAC) will return home for its final games of the regular-season next week. The Skyhawks welcome Regis University to Ray Dennison Memorial Field on Friday for a 1:00 p.m. start, followed by the finale on Sunday against UCCS at 1:00 p.m.
