Women's lacrosse falls to No. 7 Regis

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team welcomed its first nationally-ranked program to Ray Dennison Memorial Field on Friday afternoon, ultimately falling by a final score of 16-4 to No. 7 Regis University.

The loss dropped Fort Lewis to 3-10 overall and 2-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while Regis improved to 15-1 on the year and 9-0 in league play.

The Rangers held a 32-16 edge in shots and a 26-14 advantage in shots on goal for the contest. The Skyhawks committed 22 turnovers compared to 19 for the Rangers. Regis won 14 draws while Fort Lewis came away with 10.

Ellie Martinez, Caprietta Abbadessa, Valerie Garcia, and Piper Price each scored goals in the loss while Abbadessa and Victoria Barletta were both responsible for an assist. Senior Autumn Rymerson and Martinez recorded four ground balls apiece. Martinez was also the team leader with three caused turnovers, followed by Samantha Rodgers who earned two. Caley Lay and Olivia Tilbury combined for 10 saves after splitting time at goalkeeper.

The Rangers scored their first goal after 90 seconds of play after taking advantage of two Skyhawks fouls. The visitors eventually extended the lead to 3-0 before Lay could collect a pair of saves to hold the score. Fort Lewis found its way onto the scoreboard in the quarter's final minute thanks to Abbadessa, and the 3-1 score carried into the second quarter.

Mikki Brown began the second quarter with a pair of shots on goal, but the opposing keeper came away with two saves to preserve the two-goal separation. Lay followed with another save, but Regis scored significantly to extend the lead to 8-1 as the clock ticked under three minutes. Abbadessa ended the half with another shot, but the seven-goal difference carried into the break.

Regis added to its lead early in the third quarter with three straight goals to take an 11-1 lead. Fort Lewis responded with a Martinez caused turnover that led to a free position goal by Garcia to make it 11-2. Offense dominated the final five minutes of the quarter, and it was a goal by Martinez that sent the teams into the fourth quarter in a 13-3 score.

Fouls continued to plague Fort Lewis as four early miscues led to a pair of goals to make it a 12-goal difference. The Skyhawks came back with a draw control by Sydney Tannaci which led to a Price goal for a 15-4 score. The final five minutes played out with a Regis goal before one final Fort Lewis shot found the stick of the opposing keeper to end the game.

Fort Lewis (3-10, 2-7 RMAC) will play its final home game of the season on Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. opening draw against UCCS (5-8, 3-5 RMAC).
