Martinez nets go-ahead goal in final minute to secure comeback win

DURANGO, Colo. – Battling blustering snow and strong winds from start to finish, senior Ellie Martinez capped off an incredible comeback with a late goal to give the Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team a 10-9 win over CSU Pueblo on Saturday.

The Skyhawks outscored the Pack 8-2 in the second half to earn the victory, improving to 2-7 overall and 1-4 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Pack fell to 2-7 on the year and 0-5 in the league.

Fort Lewis held a 37-23 edge in shots and a 25-19 advantage in shots on goal. The teams were even with 33 ground balls apiece while the Skyhawks saw a 13-9 lead in draw controls. The Pack committed 33 turnovers—18 of which were caused by the Skyhawks.

Seniors Caprietta Abbadessa and Autumn Rymerson led the team with four goals and three goals, respectively. Junior Mikki Brown, freshman Piper Price, and Martinez each added one goal while Martinez was the team leader with two assists. Brown paced the squad with six draws. Sophomore Samantha Rodgers led the way with eight ground balls and five caused turnovers, followed by graduate student JoJo Lutz who had six ground balls and four caused turnovers. Junior Caley Lay earned her second win over the season with eight saves and just two goals allowed.

CSU Pueblo was the first to strike after taking advantage of a Fort Lewis turnover to see a 1-0 lead. Defense controlled the next four minutes of play before a goal at the 9:39 mark gave the visitors a 2-0 advantage. The Pack added a third before the Skyhawks peppered the opposing keeper with three shots on goal. Their fourth attempt snuck past the keeper, this one from Abbadessa off an assist by Phoebe Ramirez, to cut the deficit to two goals. CSU Pueblo managed to add one more goal down the stretch to carry a 4-1 lead into the second quarter.

The score moved to 5-1 just seven seconds into the second quarter before the Fort Lewis defense managed to lock it down. The team's sixth goal was scored at the 12-minute mark, but Rymerson countered three minutes later with her first goal of the contest. CSU Pueblo made it 7-2 a moment later, but Fort Lewis closed out the half with a pair of caused turnovers to make it a five-goal margin at the break.

The tides began to change for Fort Lewis in the third quarter, kicked off by an Abbadessa goal for a 7-3 score. Saves from Lay, mixed with caused turnovers from Lutz and Rodgers, preserved the score until six minutes were on the clock. Abbadessa struck again at the 6:19 mark, and the Skyhawks continued to pressure the keeper with an onslaught of shots as the quarter drifted away. The final minute of the third quarter saw an offensive surge, first with a CSU Pueblo goal before Abbadessa and Brown combined to make it 8-6 heading into the fourth.

The visitors extended the lead to three goals with an early goal, but Fort Lewis remained poised and eventually got on the board with 7:03 to go. The Skyhawks took advantage of an opposing foul to see a favorable field position two minutes later and eventually broke through with a Rymerson goal to make it 9-8. Martinez won the next draw, and Rymerson made quick work to tie the game off a quick feed. Lay made a clutch save with 2:29 remaining, and the game moved into the final 70 seconds in a deadlock. Martinez had enough of the tie, though, and racked up a caused turnover, ground ball, and veteran goal to give her team the 10-9 lead. The Pack won the next draw and seemed to have a chance for the game-tying shot, but sophomore Sydney Tannaci flew in for a caused turnover to run the clock out on a home victory.
