Late surge falls short in 2-1 road loss to (RV) Midwestern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team saw another goal from sophomore Ashlyn Salas, but the comeback fell short in a 2-1 loss to (RV) Midwestern State University on Thursday evening.

"Once we got comfortable in the first half, we opened Midwestern up. The bottom line is, you can play well and lose, and that's what happened today," said head coach Damian Clarke.

The Skyhawks outshot the Mustangs 26-17 with a 9-6 edge in shots on goal. Fort Lewis drew a season-high eight corners versus two for Midwestern State. The Mustangs were called offside twice, including a call that wiped a goal off the board.

Salas led the team with five shots, two of which were on goal, followed by junior Josie Coulter who totaled four shots and a pair on goal. Sophomore Amber Otts was credited with her first assist of the season. Four Skyhawks players remained on the field for all 90 minutes, including Elizabeth David, Gabi Meraz-Fishbein, Renee Junna, and Rachel Peebles. Fifth-year goalkeepers Riley Bravin and Katlyn Rosenbaum each collected two saves.

The Mustangs recorded their first shot of the match in the seventh minute, and the Skyhawks were not far behind after a shot from sophomore Haley Stafford careened off target in the 10th minute. Coulter was the first player to test the keeper with a shot to the bottom center of the net resulting in the afternoon's first save in the 11th minute. Bravin followed with her first save after a shot from the far corner crossed to find space in the right corner of the net. Bravin was the first to the ball with a sprawling save, her first of the match.

Salas had a prime look in the 24th minute when Stafford ran down a ball headed to the far corner. Stafford crossed the ball to a crashing Salas, but the sophomore's shot found the diving hands of the opposing keeper to hold things scoreless. The Fort Lewis defense held tough until a two-shot chance in the 32nd minute resulted in the go-ahead goal. The first shot was turned away by Bravin who dove to her right. The bounce off the save found the foot of Madison St. Brinkle who sent the game's first goal top left.

Sophomore Jenna Salazar entered the game in the 32nd minute and took four minutes to register her first shot on goal. Salazar intercepted an attempted clear by the opposing keeper and quickly collected for a long shot. Her attempt carried high and looked to have a chance to sneak in just below the crossbar before the keeper got a hand on it. Salazar had another good look in the 43rd minute, finding a one-on-one chance inside the 18-yard line, but rifled the shot wide left to preserve the score. Fort Lewis had a 17-5 edge in shots for the half, including a 4-3 lead in shots on goal.

Rosenbaum, the Fort Lewis keeper in the second half, collected her first save less than a minute into the half to get her match started between the pipes. The Skyhawks defense was under pressure again, this time in the 53rd minute when the Mustangs stole the ball in their offensive half. The goal scorer from the first half fired a shot that was heading on frame, but a sprinting Elizabeth David knocked it away for a blocked shot. Rosenbaum was tested again and earned a save after a one-touch off a cross had a chance in the 56th minute.

Sophomore Amber Otts registered the team's first shot of the half from distance after settling a pass from Meraz-Fishbein. The shot had some bend to it, but the keeper met it with a diving save to preserve the score. Midwestern State followed the attempt with action inside the box. It was St. Brinkley who took a shot from a sharp angle, sneaking in the game's second goal just outside the reach of Rosenbaum. Fort Lewis spent the next four minutes in its attacking third, but the Midwestern defense held them without a shot as the clock ticked into the 65th minute.

The Skyhawks broke the scoreless stretch in the 69th minute thanks to Salas' second goal of the season. Otts got things going when she played the ball out wide to Coulter. Coulter sent a quick touch into the box where she found Salas. The sophomore fought off defenders on her left and right shoulders to quickly poke the ball over the hand of the keeper. Midwestern State lined up for a free kick in the 73rd minute, and the attempt rattled off the post before finding the foot of a Mustang forward. The player looked to have scored the game's fourth goal but was called offside to hold the score at 2-1.

Fort Lewis was awarded a free kick with under 10 minutes remaining, but the attempt found the keeper in the middle of the net to hold the score. The Mustangs had another good look moments later, first with a shot that was cleared out off the head of Otts. The clear found Lexi St. Beck of Midwestern State who rattled a shot off the cross bar. Tapia sent a cross into traffic with two minutes remaining, but an unlucky bounce fell in favor of the home team. Fort Lewis had a pair of quality looks in the final minute, including a near miss by Coulter, as time expired on the 2-1 final.

"We made a few mistakes that allowed Midwestern to punish up, and we didn't finish the opportunities that we created," recognized Clarke. "Midwestern was tough. We will move forward to Saturday and learn from this one."

Fort Lewis (1-1-1) will play again on Saturday with a 10:00 a.m. start against UT Permian Basin in Odessa, Texas.
