Yellow Jackets handle Skyhawks in conference opener

SPEARFISH, S.D. – Unable to move the ball offensively or convert on third down, the Fort Lewis football team (1-2, 0-1 RMAC) dropped its 2024 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener on the road to Black Hills State (2-1, 1-0 RMAC) 33-7 up at a brisk Lyle Hare Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets racked up 207 yards on the ground thanks to the trio of Navarre Dixon III, Cameron Goods, and Luke Duby who each supplied 65, 64, and 33 yards respectively. Dixon III scored twice on a pair of 28-yard and seven-yard scampers. Goods added a 27-yard rushing score as well.

Duby led the passing game for Black Hills State with 165 yards and one touchdown on 14 completions in 23 attempts (60.9 percent) while also picking up a three-yard rushing touchdown as well. Duby connected with Jayden Williams for 19 yards and BHSU's lone receiving touchdown on the afternoon.

Stone Walker was Fort Lewis' lead rusher on the day with 24 net yards on 11 attempts, while Jamal Johnson added another 14 yards on seven carries. Walker went 6-for-16 (37.5 percent) through the air for 32 yards in the first half before Jacob Morris, a redshirt freshman from Chandler, Arizona, stepped in at halftime and finished the contest with 92 yards and his first career touchdown – a one-yard pass to freshman running back Orlando Guevara: his first career touchdown – on 8-of-16 (50.0 percent) passing. Morris and Walker were sacked a combined three times.

In total, the Yellow Jackets outgained the Skyhawks 373 yards to 175 yards and picked up three of Fort Lewis' four fumbles. While Black Hills State fumbled twice, junior Walter Stauffer was able to pick up the lone turnover by the home team. BHSU also dominated in time of possession 34:18 to 25:42 and limited the Skyhawks to 3-of-15 on third downs (20.0 percent) and one of two on fourth down.

Jamille Humphrey led all Skyhawks receivers with 39 yards on three receptions with Solomon Latimer adding another 34 yards on two receptions as well. Redshirt sophomore and Sparks, Nevada, native Jacob Penney led the defense for a third-straight game with 13.0 total tackles including 9.0 solo, 4.0 assisted, and 1.0 tackles for one-yard lost. Sebastian O'Farrell and Kellen Collier carried Black Hills State with 8.0 tackles apiece.
