Martin named RMAC Goalkeeper, Schufft Defensive Player of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After picking up a pair of 1-0 clean sheet wins over St. Mary's (1-1-2) and West Texas A&M (1-2-1) last week, Fort Lewis men's soccer's (3-0-1) Lucas Martin and Kaden Schufft have been named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Week Two Goalkeeper and Defensive Players of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.

The pair of awards marks the first weekly honors for a Skyhawk this season and the first weekly award of both Martin and Schufft's careers. In addition, Martin is the first Fort Lewis goalkeeper to earn keeper of the week since Peter Byrne back on Nov. 6, 2019.

Schufft, a Division II Second Team All-South Central Region selection, and member of the RMAC All-Tournament Team a season ago, guided the Skyhawks back line which aided Martin in keeping both oppositions scoreless across the week.

The Rattlers and Buffaloes combined for 29 total shots including 10 shots on goal. Both opponents also took 14 combined corner kicks against Fort Lewis' two. Neither side would find the back of the net, however, as Martin registered five saves in each contest to post back-to-back shutouts for the second time in his career.

The Skyhawks defense is one of one in the South Central region and one of only 13 program's in the nation at the NCAA Division II level to concede only one goal or fewer thus far this season. In addition, Fort Lewis is tied with No. 15-ranked CSU Pueblo for the largest goal differential in the region at +7.

Lucas Martin has been as good as any in the country as the Middlesbrough, England, native has already doubled his career shutout total from last season and currently ranks first nationally (DII) in shutouts (3), 11th in goals against average (0.250), and 11th in save percentage (0.933). Most notably, with his last clean sheet, Martin tied Devin Zimmerman (2000-01) for the tenth-most shutouts in program history.

Fort Lewis continues its march through non-conference play this Thursday, Sep. 19, with a 7:00 p.m. match against Simon Fraser (1-2-1). Colorado Mesa (1-1-1) will line up opposite Montana State Billings (1-1-2) at 4:30 p.m. on Dirks Field.

The Skyhawks will then take on MSU Billings on Saturday, Sep. 21, at 7:00 p.m. after the Mavericks and Red Leafs compete on Dirks Field at 4:30 p.m.
