Aggressive second half powers No. 9 Fort Lewis to 1-1 draw with Simon Fraser

Bergman registers first collegiate goal

DURANGO, Colo. – Despite firing off 25 shots, No. 9-ranked Fort Lewis (3-0-2) could only find the back of the net once on Thursday night under the lights as the Skyhawks battled to a 1-1 draw with Simon Fraser (1-2-2) on a brisk and breezy Dirks Field.

"I'm happy for the guys, especially the second-half performance, I thought it was really dominant. 25 shots, you take that many and you're thinking you're probably in a good position to win the game, which we were. I felt like we left a little on the table, it felt like that second goal was coming, but we just came up a little shy tonight," head coach David Oberholtzer shared post-game.

It was once again a tale of two halves for the Skyhawks, despite the comforts of a home pitch and a rowdy crowd in support. Fort Lewis played at Simon Fraser's pace in the first half but was able to force the Red Leafs to control the ball atop its defensive half for nearly 20 minutes of the match.

Both teams exchanged a single shot on goal, but it was SFU who broke through early in the 15th minute as Brandon Torresan provided service from the left side of the box to a sprinting Alexandre Marcoux who drove a striking header to the back of the net in mid-stride.

Out of the half, Fort Lewis played at an entirely different pace, one that Simon Fraser could narrowly keep up with. The Skyhawks out-shot the Red Leafs 16-to-3, took six corners against SFU's two, and committed just four fouls to SFU's seven.

The consistent attack finally paid off in the 63rd minute when David Citron found space in the top-left corner of the Red Leafs' penalty box. Citron provided service towards the penalty line, and a racing Theo Bergman took one strike with his right foot and beat the keeper to equalize and score the first goal of his collegiate career.

Lucas Martin and Simon Fraser's Jordan Thorsen each recorded two saves. Tomas Duenes led the squad with six total shots while Bergman, Citron, Jakob Larson, and Gabriel Legendre each supplied three shots as well. Michael Hennessy led the Red Leafs with three shots while Marcoux was two-for-two on shots-on-goal for the evening.
