Agostinho’s late penalty leads (RV) Skyhawks to 1-1 draw with No. 14 Tigers

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Fort Lewis, despite playing with 10 men for the final 30 minutes of action after surrendering an early goal, managed to draw a late penalty kick to equalize and force a 1-1 draw against the No. 14-ranked Fort Hays State University Tigers on the sweltering pitch of the ASU Lacrosse & Soccer Field on the campus of Adams State University.
 
Fort Hays State (2-1-1) grabbed the early momentum, quickly putting the Skyhawks (3-0-1) on their heels with an early goal in the fourth minute of the match. Francisco Degiorgi broke through the back line and pulled out the keeper before centering back across the box to an unmarked Len Valkema for the tap-in goal.
 
In a physical bout that saw 33 combined fouls and 13 cards, the Skyhawks were on the receiving end, drawing 24 fouls from Fort Hays State while committing just nine themselves. FLC received just four cautions, including a late second yellow to Frank Castro, sending him off the pitch in the 61st minute and leaving Fort Lewis down a man for the remainder of the match. FHSU was cautioned nine times.
 
However, the dismissal lit a fire under Fort Lewis, and Francisco Pinto used it to his full advantage, driving into the penalty area to draw a foul from a pair of Tigers and force the penalty kick in the 81st minute. Simão Agostinho went right, the goalkeeper went left, and the Skyhawks escaped with an equalizer.

-Fort Lewis remains unbeaten in 2026 and stands at 3-0-1 overall.
-The Tigers and Skyhawks tie in the first-ever matchup between the two teams.
-Fort Lewis out-shot Fort Hays State 12-to-8 overall and 8-to-4 in shots on goal.
-The Skyhawks drew 24 fouls and committed nine of their own.
-Simão Agostinho scored his second penalty and fifth goal of the campaign. Agostinho remains the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference leader in goals (5), points (11), shots (15), and shots on-goal (11).

Fort Lewis has one road match next week up in Nampa, Idaho, against Northwest Nazarene University (1-0-3). The Skyhawks and Nighthawks will kick off at 7 p.m. on the NNU Soccer & Lax Field.
