No. 12 Skyhawks meet Nighthawks for midweek match in Nampa

DURANGO, Colo. – Non-conference play continues on Thursday night, Sept. 10, as the No. 12-ranked Fort Lewis Skyhawks men's soccer team (3-0-1) heads North up the Rocky Mountains to Nampa, Idaho, for a midweek match at 7 p.m. under the lights at Northwest Nazarene University (1-0-3).

Last Time Out
Fort Lewis is coming off a hard-fought 1-1 draw against previously No. 14-ranked Fort Hays State University (2-1-1). The Skyhawks went down 1-0 early, and later to 10 men after a second caution was issued, but Francisco Pinto earned a penalty in the 81st minute, setting up Simão Agostinho for the equalizer. Earlier in the week, Fort Lewis handled St. Edward's 3-1 in its home opener, with three different Skyhawks finding the back of the net, including the first of the year from Raul Baptista Filipe.
 
Soaring Into the Top 25
In the latest edition of the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Coaches' Poll, the Fort Lewis Skyhawks vaulted from receiving votes to No. 12. FLC is the second-highest-ranked program from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference behind No. 4-ranked University of Colorado Colorado Springs (3-0-1). Colorado State University Pueblo (3-0-0) moved to No. 22, and Regis University (1-1-1) fell off the poll from its previous No. 20-ranking, but still received votes. The Skyhawks were also ranked third in the South-Central region behind UCCS and defending national champions and No. 6-ranked Midwestern State University (2-0-2).
 
Offensive Pressure
Scoring early and often has been Fort Lewis' forte thus far, as the Skyhawks rank among the best offensively in Division II, including second in shots on-goal percentage (68.6 percent), fifth in goal differential (+10), sixth in total goals (13), sixth in total points (35), eighth in shots on-goal per game (8.75), and 11th in goals per game (3.25). Through four games, Fort Lewis has outshot opponents 51-to-34 overall and 35-to-14 in shots on-goal. In addition, FLC has forced 21 corner kicks and two penalties.
 
Series History
Fort Lewis and Northwest Nazarene will meet for the third time overall and the first time in Nampa, Idaho, on Thursday night. The Skyhawks lead the Nighthawks 1-0-1 overall, thanks to a dominant 8-1 rout over NNU on Sept. 20, 2025. Lorenz Guintini recorded his first hat trick, Pinto his first brace, and three other Skyhawks found the back of the net while FLC out-shot NNU 30-to-12 overall and 13-to-4 in shots on goal. The two teams fought to a 1-1 draw, despite FLC being down a man from the 20th minute, on Sept. 6, 2018, at Colorado Mesa University.
 
Scouting the Nighthawks
Northwest Nazarene enters Thursday's contest fresh off its first win of the year following a 1-0 decision at Menlo College (1-2). The win also marked the Nighthawks' first clean sheet, after earning 1-1, 1-1, and 2-2 ties to open the season. Most notably, NNU fought fellow RMAC members Westminster University (1-0-3) and MSU Denver (1-1-2) to one-score draws.
 
Head coach Julio Castillo is in his first season at the helm of the program; the former Second-Team All-American at NNU graduated in 2015 and has been an assistant coach with the program since 2021. Castillo's squad is averaging 1.25 goals on 10.8 shots per game with a 44.2 percent shots-on-goal percentage. Defensively, the Nighthawks are allowing 1.00 goals on 10.3 shots per game and a 43.9 percent shots-on-goal percentage.
 
Junior forward Caleb Putney leads the team with two goals and two assists for six total points. Alex Barragan, Elijah Grimaldo, and Ryan McPherson have added one goal each, and Carson Din and Sharif Adbullahi have each made assists. Elijah Brockl is the lead goalkeeper, boasting a 1.05 goals-against average and 80 percent save percentage with 12 saves against 35 shots faced.
 
Looking Ahead
Fort Lewis has a home-and-away split next week, first heading up to Grand Junction, Colo., to challenge Colorado Mesa (0-1-3) at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17. The Skyhawks will then host No. 22 CSU Pueblo on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 2:30 p.m. on Dirks Field.
