Women's soccer makes home debut against ThunderWolves

DURANGO, Colo. – Skyhawks women's soccer makes its home debut on Friday under the lights when they kick off the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference portion of their schedule against CSU Pueblo.

Last Time Out
Fort Lewis earned a 4-2 win in its final road, nonconference match against West Texas A&M on Sunday. Fort Lewis out shot West Texas 17-12 for the match, including an 8-3 edge in shots on goal. The teams combined for nine fouls and seven corners. Fifth-year goalkeepers Riley Bravin and Katlyn Rosenbaum combined for the win. Fifth-year Elizabeth David, senior Gabi Meraz-Fishbein, and junior Renee Junna each played the full 90 minutes.

Junior Abigail Nkrumah got the scoring started with the first goal of her Fort Lewis career off an assist from senior Danielle Gonzales and junior Anna Tucker. Sophomore Jenna Salazar followed with a header goal off an assist from Gonzales. Sophomore Abila Tapia followed with goals in the 64th and 68th minutes, bringing her season total to three. Sophomore Ann Spence earned an assist on the match's third goal.

Scouting CSU Pueblo
The Pack is 1-3-2 this season and has lost three in a row against Cal State San Marcos (3-0), #10 Tampa (2-1), and #7 Cal Poly Pomona (6-2). CSU Pueblo is coming off a 7-5-6 season in 2023 where they went 5-3-4 in conference play. They advanced to the RMAC Tournament Quarterfinal where they fell 3-1 to #3 seeded Regis.

As a team, the Pack is averaging one goal per game while allowing 2.17 from their opponents. They put up 7.7 shots per game compared to 13.5 from the other side. CSU Pueblo has totaled 16 corners compared to 51 from their foes. Sydney Lasater, a transfer from UCCS, leads the team with three goals which she has scored in six shots on goal. Three players follow with one goal on the year, and two additional players have been credited with assists. Goalkeepers Jacqueline Dominguez and Elaina Leitner have split time, but it has been Leitner as of late. The freshman has a 3.55 goals against average after facing some of the nation's toughest competition.

The all-time series between Fort Lewis and CSU Pueblo favors the Skyhawks, 24-19-7. The Skyhawks are 11-9-2 at home throughout the span. Recent history has favored the Pack, though, including one goal wins in 2021 and 2022. Last season the teams played to a 1-1 tie in Pueblo. Ashlyn Salas scored the equalizer in the 75th minute off a service from Sabrina Reyes.

With volleyball, women's soccer, men's soccer, and football playing at home this week, Skyhawks athletics has selected the homestand as its White Out week. Inside the Numbers
Fort Lewis is averaging 2.20 goals per game while holding its opponents to 1.20 per game. They average 17.8 shots per game compared to 11.2 on the other side. The team has 11 goals from eight different players to go along with 11 assists. Sophomore Abila Tapia leads the team with three goals and an assist (7 points) while three players have two assists to their credit. Senior Gabi Meraz-Fishbein,  junior Anna Tucker, and Tapia each have one game-winner. Meraz-Fishbein leads the team with 418 minute played, followed by junior Rachel Peebles at 411 minutes. Bravin and Rosenbaum have combined for 16 saves and a saves percentage of .727.

Around the RMAC
The league has two teams ranked or receiving votes in the latest version of the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll. Colorado School of Mines leads the way with a No. 3 ranking and an unblemished 6-0 record. Colorado Mesa dropped out of the poll and is receiving votes.

Mines ranks first in the conference, followed by Fort Lewis with a .700 win percentage. Westminster and Colorado Mesa follow in third and fourth. In the conference statistical rankings, Fort Lewis sits 2nd in shots per game (17.8), 4th in shots on goal/game (7.40), 2nd in goals/game (2.20), 2nd in assists/game (2.20), and 3rd in (fewest) fouls per game (6.20).

Meraz-Fishbein ranks 2nd in shots/game (4.20) and 3rd in shots on goal/game (1.60). Tapia is 2nd in goals/game (.600), and the Skyhawks have four players ranked in the top-15 in assists/game.

Up next
Fort Lewis will have a week to recover and prepare for its first RMAC road trip. The Skyhawks will face New Mexico Highlands on Friday, October 4 at 1:00 p.m., followed by a Sunday match against Adams State University at 1:00 p.m.
