No. 21 Skyhawks rout Chaparrals in 2024 season opener

Fort Lewis moves to 1-0 behind Citron's career performance

LUBBOCK, Texas – Anton Hjalmarsson kicked off the action with a goal in the 21st minute before Tomas Duenes added a goal at the 24-minute, David Citron a pair of goals in the 63rd and 81st minutes, and Vincent Edgell a goal in the 85th minute as the No. 21-ranked Fort Lewis men's soccer team blanked Lubbock Christian in the season opener under the lights down at the LCU Soccer & Track Facility.

Fort Lewis secures its first season-opening victory since felling the Chaparrals 3-1 on Dirks Field in Durango, Colo., back on Sep. 2, 2021. In addition to taking a 2-1-1 advantage in the all-time series over LCU, the Skyhawks also picked up the program's first-ever win in Lubbock.

"That was a fantastic all-around team performance tonight, what a great way to start the season," head coach David Oberholtzer shared. "The five goals were great, but on the other side, keeping the clean sheet was huge; we've placed a major emphasis on defense heading into this season."

Sophomore Luca Martin, who started in all but one match for the Skyhawks last season, earns the fourth shutout of his career to stand just two away from Fort Lewis' top-ten career shutouts list.

Despite a physical game that saw both teams combine for 33 fouls and six yellow cards, Fort Lewis held its hand on the wheel across all 90 minutes. Martin had quite the quiet night, needing only two saves across 10 total shots to keep the Chaparrals scoreless.

It all started when Hjalmarsson got a foot to an outlet pass from Lubbock Christian's backline. Quinn Bosanko swiped the ball from his defender before feeding Duenes down near the box. Duenes then found Gabriel Legendre from 16 yards out, but Hjalmarsson scorched the ball into the open net after LCU goalkeeper Connor Pettigrew blocked Legendre's initial shot.

Just shy of three minutes later, Duenes would give the Skyhawks a 2-0 lead heading into the locker room after finding just enough space between six defenders to rifle a goal inside the right post past the keeper without a save attempt.

LCU seemed to quiet the storm up until the 60th minute when Fort Lewis went back on the offensive. Casey Stracher got hold of the ball roughly 10 yards into the Skyhawks defensive half and with one swing, volleyed the ball 15 yards shy of the opposite end line to Citron. Citron cut left, leaving his defender behind, and struck for his first goal of the season from the corner of the six-yard box. Citron picked up his second goal of the night on a free kick that started six yards up from the end line and halfway between the penalty box and the sideline and found the top-left corner of the net past the diving Pettigrew.

"David was special tonight, what a great pair of goals for him. Last year, he maybe lacked confidence but had a huge summer and has been sharp ever since arriving back on campus."

True freshman Vincent Edgell later checked in for Citron, and in only 28 seconds, found himself with possession at midfield before sprinting past two defenders, avoiding a tackle, and firing his first collegiate goal into the back-right corner of the net to cap the contest.

"Super happy for Vince. He was able to get on late, and what an individual moment of brilliance; a great move and a great finish."
