(RV) Skyhawks best Hilltoppers 3-1 in triumphant debut on Dirks Field

Fort Lewis 3-0 for first time since 2011

DURANGO, Colo. – Raul Baptista Filipe netted an early free kick, William Bretvik knocked in a second-half clean-up goal, and Fabrizio Aguilera displayed a shot of brilliance to seal the match as the Fort Lewis men's soccer team defeated St. Edward's University 3-1 in the Skyhawks 2026 home opener at a rowdy Dirks Field.

Fort Lewis improved to 3-0 with yet another multi-goal performance while St. Edward's fell to 1-1-1 on its first loss of the season. The Skyhawks' offense was relentless in the win, firing 18 shots, 13 of which went on target. St. Edward's goalkeeper Edward Alonzi put up nine saves between the posts, marking a new career-high and the seventh-most in DII thus far.

The Skyhawks went on the offensive early, forcing the Hilltoppers into their own defensive half for nearly 30 minutes of the match, and Baptista Filipe broke through in the 28th minute as the junior midfielder took dead-aim on a free kick just outside the top-left corner of the box and buried the shot in the top-left corner.

While St. Edward's managed to keep Fort Lewis scoreless for the remainder of the half, the Skyhawks couldn't be halted for long, and Simão Agostinho finally broke through in the 60th minute. Agostinho took service on a through ball and bested the back line, ultimately driving inside the area where Alonzi made a brilliant save; however, Bretvik was ready for the deflection and punched the loose ball into the back-right corner for his second career goal in as many matches.

St. Edward's would chip away at Fort Lewis' lead, thanks to a strong centering pass from Jake Ciccarello near the touchline that left Bartek Zabek wide open 25 yards out from goal in the center of the pitch. With one touch, Zabek wound up and fired a rocket into the top-left corner of the post.

Seconds later, the Hilltoppers were approaching goal once more, but this time goalkeeper Lucas Martin managed to belt a clearing ball from just outside of his goal area to flip the field. To the surprise of the SEU defense, Aguilera was waiting, and on the second bounce, sent a stunning volley off his left foot that dove just beneath the crossbar.
