Salas scores to secure season opening tie for the Skyhawks

LUBBOCK, Texas – Sophomore Ashlyn Salas began the season with a memorable performance, scoring the equalizer with five minutes remaining to give the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team a season-opening tie against Lubbock Christian University.

Fort Lewis outshot Lubbock Christian 18-11 for the match, including a 9-7 lead in shots on goal. The teams combined for 14 fouls and each received one yellow card. Salas scored the team's lone goal, bringing her career total to three, while sophomore Abila Tapia was credited with her first career assist on the play. Senior Gabi Meraz-Fishbein recorded nine shots (four SOG), followed by senior Sabrina Reyes and Salas who each had four shots. The fifth year goalkeeping duo of Riley Bravin and Katlyn Rosenbaum combined for six saves.

"We had a great mentality as a whole and it looked like it was our first game of the season," acknowledged head coach Damian Clarke. "We relaxed and started to use our possession well when we put Makenna Ford in. She was the best player for us today and connected to allow us to control tempo. Katlyn (Rosenbaum) also played huge in the second half after defending three corners in the last minute."

Bravin was tested less than a minute into the contest when Lubbock's Ella Spiller sent a shot bottom left for Bravin's first save of the season. Sophomore Ashlyn Salas got the Skyhawks registered in the shot column in the third minute when she beat her defender and sent a shot on goal into the belly of the opposing keeper.  Senior Gabi Meraz-Fishbein was the next Fort Lewis player to put a shot on target after finding a pass from junior Josie Coulter that had the keeper diving to her right for a save.

After 15 minutes of play, the offensive stats favored the Skyhawks with six shots and four shots on goal compared to three and one by the Lady Chaps. The home team had a free kick chance in the 19th minute, but the second touch was blocked by the Fort Lewis defense to preserve the tie.

Lubbock Christian saw its second shot on goal of the match in the 25th minute when a throw-in saw a favorable bounce into the penalty box. Several players scuffled over the loose ball before Bravin wrangled a sharp shot. Fort Lewis had a late look when a yellow card was charged to Lubbock Christian, but the clock would ultimately expire on a scoreless half. The Skyhawks held a 7-4 advantage in shots and a 4-2 edge in shots on goal.

Reyes was the first player to test the opposition out of the break, but her shot from 25 yards out bounced into the arms of the Lady Chaps keeper. Lubbock Christian had a near miss in the 52nd minute when a cross passed just inches from a crashing forward inside of the box. Moments later, Fort Lewis was charged with a yellow card which led to a free kick near the midfield mark. The long pass found Ella Spiller just in front of the goal, and Spiller quickly placed the ball bottom left to make it 1-0.

Reyes responded a minute later with a header that looked to be on pace to find the back of the net. The shot was redirected at the last moment to hold the score. Fort Lewis continued to pressure the defense with back-to-back shots bringing its total to 12 for the match. The teams played even over the following 15 minutes of play with throw-ins comprising much of the action.

Fort Lewis had another promising chance, this time in the 79th minute, when a corner by sophomore Abila Tapia connected with the head of Meraz-Fishbein. The opposing keeper was in good position to make her seventh save of the outing. The teams followed up the opportunity by trading incredibly close misses within the span of 30 seconds. The Skyhawks would not go down without a fight, though, and a savvy shot by Salas would knot the game with five minutes remaining. A free kick chance from 60 yards out was taken by fifth-year Elizabeth David who booted a beautiful ball into the box. Tapia settled an nudged a pass ahead to Salas who found space and went low right to make it 1-1.

The Lady Chaps had another good look with a minute remaining when a long shot appeared to have space high above the head of Rosenbaum. Rosenbaum read the path well and made a leaping poke to send the ball out of play. The final seconds were high-stress for the Skyhawks defense with several corner kicks leading to traffic in front of the net. Rosenbaum would tally a final save down the stretch as time expired on a 1-1 tie.
