Three score in dominant shutout for Skyhawks women's soccer

PORTALES, N.M. – Aided by goals from three different players, the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team dominated Eastern New Mexico University to secure its first win of the season. The Skyhawks now have four goals on the year from four different players.

With the win, Fort Lewis heads home with a 1-0-1 record while EMNU falls to 0-1-1 overall.

"Winning ball in the air was what we wanted to fix from what we saw on Thursday. The back did really well to adjust and make this happen," said head coach Damian Clarke. "There were a few tense minutes to start the game but scoring in the first 10 minute allowed us to settle in."

The Skyhawks dominated offensively with 22 shots compared to just three for the Greyhounds. The Lewis played to five corners and held ENMU to one. Goalkeepers Katlyn Rosenbaum and Riley Bravin combined for their first shutout of the season, each collecting one save. Seniors Gabi Meraz-Fishbein and Danielle Gonzales were the first to score, followed by sophomore Abila Tapia who netted that match's fourth goal. Junior Josie Coulter and sophomore Haley Stafford each dished out an assist.

Fort Lewis had the first opportunity of the match when a free kick allowed for favorable field position. The Skyhawks worked their way into the offensive third with a throw in, and two minutes later made it a 1-0 game. Coulter and Stafford settled the ball and sent a pass ahead to Meraz-Fishbein who stuck it bottom center for her first goal of the season. Coulter followed with a shot on goal, but this attempt was corralled by the opposing keeper to keep the match at a one-goal difference. The Greyhounds had a notable opportunity in the 26th minute with a sharp shot from 20 yards out, but the attempt flew left of goal to preserve the score.

After heavy traffic outside of the box the Greyhounds goal, the Skyhawks eventually forced a foul to earn a free kick 34 yards out. Gonzales was called on to take the shot, and the senior booted a well-placed shot just under the crossbar and out of the keeper's reach to double the lead at 2-0. Rosenbaum, the game's starting keeper, made her first save of the half in the 37th minute when a shot from the far side was easily secured by the fifth year. The Skyhawks sent in four subs late in the half, and the frame ended with a pair of shots by junior Anna Tucker narrowly missing wide. Fort Lewis held a 9-2 shot advantage in the first half.

The second half opened with a good look for Fort Lewis, but the cross was intercepted by the opposing keeper who read the play well. ENMU had their first chance in the 55th minute when the forward won the ball in the near corner and beat her defender. She took a quality shot at a tough angle, but Bravin was there to collect. Meraz-Fishbein added to the shot total with back-to-back attempts to bring the game to the 62nd minute. A corner kick set up Coulter for a header attempt, followed by a blocked shot off the foot of Meraz-Fishbein to keep it a two-goal difference.

The blocked shots eventually caused enough chaos for the opposing defenders that the Skyhawks found an opening. This time it was Tapia who made her mark with a left-footed shot to the top left corner for a 3-0 Skyhawks lead. The Skyhawks brought into another wave of subs, including Taylor Rittman who tested the next ENMU keeper with a shot bottom left that was reeled in for a save. Rittman added another shot, this one on goal on a through ball breakaway, but the keeper met her out of the box to deflect out of play.

"We are getting production in the wide spaces and getting numbers in the box to finish balls," noted Clarke. "Haley's cross created a goal for Gabi, then Gonzo (Danielle Gonzales) smashed a direct kick from 30 to make it 2-0. From that point forward, we had control of the game."
