Skyhawks surrender late scoring run, fall to Mountain Lions 74-71

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – UCCS outscored the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team by 10 points in the fourth quarter to earn a come-from-behind win inside the Gallogly Event Center, hold onto a 74-71 final at the buzzer.

Fort Lewis fell to 5-13 overall and 2-8 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while UCCS improved to 10-7 on the year and 6-4 in the conference.

The Skyhawks shot 38.1 percent (24-of-63) from the field and made nine three-pointers—seven in the first quarter. The Mountain Lions came away with a mark of 37.3 percent (22-of-59) from the field and dropped in 25 free throws. Fort Lewis was outrebounded 44-38 and had two players foul out.

Freshman Katie Lamb led all players with a career-high 27 points (8-12 FG, 6-6 FT), followed by senior Darla Hernandez's career-high 23 points (8-16 FG) to go along with 10 rebounds. Senior Livia Knapp rounded out double-digit scorers with 10 points and four assists. UCCS was led by Maison White's 21 point, 17 rebound double-double.

Fort Lewis found itself in a hole early in the first quarter, but Lamb had the hot hand and went three-of-three over the next two minutes to give her team a 13-12 lead. The Mountain Lions tied things up with a made free throw and added four more points after a media timeout for a 17-13 edge at the 3:37 mark. Guanella drove to the rim for two points for a one-possession difference, and Knapp followed with a three to make it 19-18. Fouls continued to add up for the Skyhawks with the seventh of the quarter leading to a late free throw to give the home team a 20-18 lead after 10 minutes.

The Skyhawks immediately tied the game in their first possession of the second quarter thanks to another driving layup by Guanella—her second of the game. The tied score stood until the 7:30 point when UCCS converted a floating jumper for a narrow lead. Hernandez scored her first bucket of the afternoon to tie the game yet again, and Lamb added five more points in 20 seconds to give Fort Lewis a 27-24 lead. Hernandez extended the lead with two makes at the stripe, but the Mountain Lions came back with a deep three and two made free throws to go up 30-29 with under four minutes remaining. The latter half of the second quarter saw threes from Lamb and Laisha Armendariz for a 41-40 Fort Lewis lead heading into the break. Lamb racked up 21 points in the first half to sit just one shy of a career-high.

The success from three carried into the third quarter thanks to a made shot from Knapp, and Lamb established a career-high with a pair of free throws for a 46-42 to force an early timeout. The Skyhawks extended the lead to 50-44 while holding the Mountain Lions to just one made field goal after four minutes of play in the quarter. UCCS responded with back-to-back layups for a two-point difference, but a quick drive by Armendariz added some cushion for Fort Lewis. Lamb continued to be a force and brought her point total to 27 to bring the lead to five points with 2:30 to go. Hernandez started to rack up points and aided an 8-0 scoring run with a pair of jumpers, giving herself 16 points and making it 6-51. The final minute saw two points at the free throw line for UCCS to make it 60-53 in favor of Fort Lewis heading into the fourth quarter.

UCCS opened the quarter with shots at the free throw line, cutting the difference to five points. After two minutes, the teams had traded three's, including one from Hernandez to bring the score to 63-58. Hernandez established a career-high with 21 points after dropping in two free throws, and UCCS answered with two field goals to trail by just one point midway through the quarter. The Mountain Lions' leading scorer, All-RMAC returner Maison White, gave her team its first lead of the quarter with a layup to make it 66-65 with 3:08 to go. The 16-2 scoring run for the Mountain Lions was slowed down thanks to a pair of made free throws for the Skyhawks to bring things to 71-67 with 90 seconds on the clock. A costly offensive foul led to made free throws to put the difference at six points with 45 seconds remaining. Knapp converted a steal by Guanella to cut the deficit, and a crafty layup by Hernandez made it 73-71 with two seconds to go. UCCS made one shot at the stripe, giving Fort Lewis a narrow margin for a late hail mary, but the attempt fell short to end the game in a 74-71 final.

Fort Lewis is back on the road next week with games against Colorado School of Mines and MSU Denver. The Skyhawks clash with the Orediggers on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. inside of Lockridge Arena and wrap up the week on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against the Roadrunners.
