Knapp pours in 30 points in overtime loss to Orediggers

GOLDEN, Colo. – Senior Livia Knapp contributed a career-high 30 points, the first Fort Lewis College (5-14, 2-9 RMAC) player since the 2022-23 season to reach that milestone, in a heartbreaking 81-76 overtime loss to Colorado School of Mines (8-11, 6-5 RMAC) on Thursday night.

The Skyhawks shot the ball well, converting 31 field goals for a field goal percentage of 53.4—the second-best clip of the season. They shot 47.6 percent (10-of-21) from three and shot just five free throws, all of which came in quarters one and two. Mines slashed .453/.412/.762 and got to the line 21 times. Fort Lewis claimed the rebounding battle, 33-32, but was -9 in turnovers.

Knapp led all players with 30 points (13-of-20) to go along with six assists. Freshman Katie Lamb followed with 20 points and a career-high eight rebounds. Senior Darla Hernandez turned in her seventh double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Claudia Palacio Gámez led the team by playing 42 minutes, and four additional players were on the court for at least 35 minutes. Mines was led by reigning RMAC Offensive Player of the Week, Jenna Siebert, who poured in 28 points.

The Orediggers converted their first three shots to take a quick 6-0 lead before a rare three-pointer from Hernandez sliced the lead in half. Later on, Knapp pulled the Skyhawks within two with a corner three, and Hernandez followed with a jumper for a 10-10 deadlock at the five-minute mark. Fort Lewis saw its first lead of the night out of a media timeout thanks to a driving layup off the hand of Trista Hoobler, and the sophomore padded the advantage 40 seconds later with a three-point play. Mines put an end to a nearly four-minute-long scoreless stretch to make it a one possession game with 2:22 on the clock. Fort Lewis ended the quarter on a 6-2 scoring run to hold a 21-14 lead after 10 minutes of play.

The first minute of the second quarter saw three points by Knapp, including a layup off a pinpoint pass from Lamb, to allow for an eight-point Fort Lewis lead. Scoring was hard to come by for both teams as two minutes ticked by with defense at the forefront. Lamb eventually broke the spell with two made free throws for a 26-16 lead with six minutes remaining. Mines connected on back-to-back threes, its first and second of the game, to cut the difference to 28-24 with 4:08 to go. Ball handling miscues plagued Fort Lewis over the next two minute, allowing for a Mines scoring run to reclaim the lead at 30-28. Knapp tied the game at 30-30, and the teams played scoreless hoops for the final two minutes to remain deadlocked at halftime.

The three-ball was firing for Fort Lewis out of the break after field goals from Lamb and Knapp made it a 36-32 lead. Hernandez got in on the scoring from beyond the arc and reached double-figures with a quick three at the seven-minute make, making it 41-34. The Orediggers scored the next six points to force a timeout with the Skyhawks leading by one. Mines eventually took the lead back and held onto the one possession advantage with the clock drifting under two minutes. After two minutes of scoreless play for the Skyhawks, Lamb knocked down a step-back three for a 48-47 lead with 63 second to go. Mines quickly reclaimed the lead following a turnaround jumper, but Knapp had the final look of the quarter and made it 51-49 in favor of Fort Lewis at the buzzer. There were six ties and six lead changes in the third quarter.

Mines scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to see a three-point lead, and Knapp trimmed it with her career-high 20th points of the night at the 8:48 mark. Lamb tied the score at 56-all thanks to her third three-pointer, and Mines immediately responded with a three of its own to hold a 59-56 lead at the media break. Lamb gave her team the lead once again after scoring five-straight points, reaching 18 points on the night and making it 63-62 with 4:43 on the clock. Fort Lewis' scoring streak extended to 10 points after Knapp found Claudia Palacio Gámez in the corner for a three that made it 68-62. Mines clawed back with five quick points and eventually tied the game at 70-70 with 1:49 remaining. A turnover led to an Oredigger lead, and Knapp dropped in a fade away shot for a 72-72 deadlock with just 23 second left. Fort Lewis was called for a foul with nine seconds left, but both shots rattled off the rim to hold the score with one shot awaiting the Skyhawks. Knapp's late floater came up short, and a defensive rebound led the teams into an overtime period.

Both teams committed turnovers in the first minute of the five minutes overtime period before a pair of made free throws eventually game Mines a 74-72 lead. Lamb got Fort Lewis on the board with a driving layup, but the Orediggers extended their lead to four points after time at the stripe. Knapp cut the difference to two points, Lamb followed with a crucial defensive rebound, but a costly turnover gave Mines the ball with 13 seconds on the clock. One made free throw gave the Skyhawks the ball with 10 seconds to work with, but the team's 21st turnover of the night and a late foul ended the hard-fought contest in an 81-76 heartbreaker.

Fort Lewis (5-14, 2-9 RMAC) turns its attention to Saturday afternoon where it will take on MSU Denver for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off inside the Auraria Event Center.
