Skyhawks drop a pair on Opening Day in Irvine

Fockler, Lister shine in collegiate debuts

IRVINE, Calif. – Cold bats and defensive miscues doomed the Fort Lewis softball team (0-2) on the opening day of the Concordia Kickoff Classic, resulting in a pair of 3-2 and 7-3 losses to Dominican (Calif.) (1-1) and Sonoma State (1-1), respectively, at the OC Great Park.

A slow start to the morning set the tone for the afternoon as Fort Lewis was no-hit in its first three innings of action. The toughest challenge for the Skyhawks, however, was settling defensively with a combined six errors across the day.

Senior shortstop Alex Tenorio led all FLC players with three total hits on the day while freshman Alyssa Fockler, sophomore Natalie Rodman, and senior Briana Jorgensen each supplied two hits. Fockler registered a pair of doubles in her two hits while freshman Rhiannon Lister added a double of her own to round-out Fort Lewis' extra-base hits. Lister was the only player with two runs batted in.

Dominican 3, Fort Lewis 2
The Penguins jumped out to an early lead, scoring on the second pitch of the day with a sacrifice bunt from Tiare Gurrerro after Melissa Garcia belted a triple off the left-field wall on the first pitch of the season.

Following five scoreless innings, the Skyhawks finally found life as Fockler doubled to open the bottom half of the sixth inning. After a fielding error and a fielder's choice moved Rodman to second with Fockler out at third, Makenna Milliman singled to the pitcher, and Rodman flew around third to beat the throw from first and tie the ball game.

Starting with a runner on second base in extra innings, the Penguins strung together a single and double to strike twice. Fort Lewis answered, with Rodman singling to bring home Emalynn Redmann, but a strikeout ended the game the following at-bat.

Both pitchers went the distance, with Kassidy Stetler (1-0) earning the win for Dominican after allowing only two runs, both unearned, on three hits, one walk, and six strikeouts. Hailie Mann (0-1) was dealt the loss, surrendering three runs on six hits, three hit-by-pitches, and a walk. Mann gave up just two earned runs and struck out six.

Sonoma State 7, Fort Lewis 3
Fort Lewis, the designated visitors in game two, flipped the script to start the contest, picking up a pair of singles off the bats of Rodman and Tenorio. But unable to push either across, Sonoma State then took advantage in the bottom of the frame, following up back-to-back singles with an error and a fielder's choice to take the lead.

The Seawolves offense kept pace, scoring in all but one inning, including a two-run inside-the-park home run off the barrel of Sophia Newcomb. Newcomb matched Iris Bejarano with a game-high three hits.

The top of the fifth was the only inning to favor the Skyhawks. Rodman opening the frame with a walk, and Redmann singled two at-bats later before Lister belted a double into the lights and off the right-center field fence to plate the pair. After advancing on a ground-out, Lister then scored on a rocket of a single from Jorgensen to left field.

Alexis Camberos (1-0) took the win for the Seawolves, scattering three earned runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 4.2 innings of work. Emily Hinchey was lights-out from then on, allowing just one hit and giving up one walk in her 2.1 innings pitched to pick up the save. Amiee Shanks (0-1) took the loss, allowing seven runs, only four of which were earned, on 12 hits while striking out two.
