Men’s soccer falls to No. 18 on USC national poll

DURANGO, Colo. – Following a tough road trip, the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team (4-2-4, 0-1-2 RMAC) has fallen nine spots to No. 18 on the latest edition of the United Soccer Coaches top 25 national poll.

The Skyhawks went on the road last weekend, earning a last-second 3-3 draw at Westminster University (5-5-2, 1-1-2 RMAC) before suffering a 4-1 loss at Colorado Mesa University (5-4-2, 2-1-1 RMAC). Fort Lewis has accumulated two conference points through three matches thus far.

It will be a critical week at home for Fort Lewis, as the Skyhawks first host conference-leader University of Colorado Colorado Springs (6-3-3, 4-0-0 RMAC), who jumped back on the national poll at No. 22 this week, on Thursday, Oct. 16, at 7 pm, before welcoming No. 23-ranked Colorado State University Pueblo (4-1-7, 0-1-3 RMAC) on Sunday, Oct. 19, at 1 pm. Both matches are part of Fort Lewis' White Out and Homecoming Week, and FLC will also honor the 20th anniversary of the program's 2005 national championship team on Thursday night as well.

Earlier this season, Fort Lewis downed UCCS 2-1 over in Colorado Springs, Colo., in a non-conference bout. Both Yohann Fila and Lorenz Guintini found the back of the net, but the Mountain Lions avoided the shutout with a penalty kick goal in the 79th minute. The Skyhawks then suffered a 2-1 loss to CSU Pueblo after the ThunderWolves went up 2-0 before Mathias Valverde found the back of the net in the 81st minute.

Midwestern State University (7-2-3, 3-1-0 LSC) is now the favorite in the South-Central region, edging the Skyhawks for the top spot while the Mustangs also climb to No. 9 on the national poll.
