Penney makes incredible defensive effort in Skyhawks road loss to Mavericks

Penney records second-most tackles in program history

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Fort Lewis finally broke through its scoreless skid Saturday afternoon at Stocker Stadium as Solomon Latimer and Michael Collins each hauled in touchdowns, but Colorado Mesa University ultimately came away as the victor with the Mavericks defeating the Skyhawks 24-14 in front of a rowdy homecoming crowd of 4,765.

Jake Penney posted an incredible individual defensive effort for the Skyhawks, registering a career-high 21 total tackles, featuring five solo stops and 16 assisted tackles, to notch the second-most tackles in a single game in Fort Lewis program history. The mark also tied for the second-most tackles in a game in Division II this year. Penney also made 2.0 of the team's 4.0 tackles for loss, dropping the Mavericks for four yards lost.

Colorado Mesa (4-4, 3-3 RMAC) out-gained the visitors with 351 yards of total offense while holding the Skyhawks scoreless for 48 minutes. The Mavericks rumbled on the ground, staying true to their identity for 274 rushing yards and all three touchdowns. Aiden Taylor led the charge with a season-high 168 yards and one touchdown on 26 carries. Brandon Belgrave poured in 77 yards and a score on 13 carries, and Colton Mills-Younger added the final score on his lone one-yard rush.

Fort Lewis (1-7, 0-6 RMAC) mustered up 222 yards of total offense, living primarily through the air with 113 yards and two touchdowns. Jacob Morris settled into the pocket for 106 yards and one touchdown with 12 completions in 22 attempts (54.5 percent) while taking two sacks for a combined loss of 22 yards. Derek Hester had a four-yard completion in his single effort, and KB Broadus, who led the FLC ground game with 63 yards on 14 carries, completed his first career passing attempt in the fourth quarter with a three-yard jump-shot toss to Michael Collins for the final score of the contest. Collins finished with a career-high three catches and 28 yards while adding his second touchdown of the campaign.

Porter Delnoce joined Fort Lewis' list of 15 different players to force a takeaway this season, punching out his first career fumble while also recording a career-high six total tackles. With Delnoce's punch-out, recovered by Khalil Ali, the Skyhawks continue to dominate the league with 14 forced fumbles. Joseph Taylor jumped on the takeaway train as well, bringing down his first career interception before making a 10-yard return. FLC is second in the league with 10 total interceptions thus far.

Despite the loss, the Skyhawks showed great growth on offense, converting on 5-of-12 (41.7 percent) third-downs and making their first fourth-down conversion of the season.
